it is a rhetorical technique, to present two alternatives, one of which is obviously terrible, to reinforce the correctness of the other option.

it is extremely clear that these parents do not consider beating and supporting their kids to be equally valid alternatives.

I’m about to blow your mind here but puberty is gonna happen either way. Either with testosteron or with estrogen. Just because your body predominantly produces one of the two doesn’t mean it’s the right thing for you. So don’t talk about “a phase”.

Puberty blockers are a thing for just that reason. Cis kids have been taking them since the 80’s for precocious puberty and trans kids since the 90’s for gender dysphoria. They are safe and effective, and allow a decision about puberty to be put off as long as is necessary to assuage any doubts.

are you saying that because of this part of the article:

“If somebody is expressing something to you clearly and consistently, especially as a parent, you have two choices: Either you try to beat it out of them, or [you] accept them where they are,” says Joanna, a 34-year-old who works in tech in Brooklyn, who remembers suppressing feelings of gender dysphoria as early as 8 years old.
