Someone on Lemmy somewhere brought up Vines, and I really miss that period of time on the internet.

It seemed like everything was done just for fun rather than for profit. Like I’m sure Vine wanted to make money, but the people posting (for the most part?) just seemed to be enjoying the “fame” more so than trying to be an influencer or whatever.

Forum posts were the same… people sharing knowledge because they wanted to, not because they were trying to drive traffic to their monetisation machine. Or if it was driving traffic it was in an honest way, you know? Like someone asks how to adapt a certain gearbox to a certain motor for an engine conversion, and a someone says “you can do it by doing x,y,z and btw we sell a kit for about $500 that contains everything you need at my shop (contact details here)”

Personal websites and blogs were so much more a thing and a Google search actually returned relevant results because John Smith wrote on his blog at wangtech.edu/~jsmith/index.html that to create a circuit for an LED light you need this particular component in series and here’s how to calculate it x+y+z/100.

    Get off my lawn, etc.

A bit of that is still around. Marginalia is a search engine that skews towards it. Small web or indie web are the trendy terms for what you’re talking about.

I totally agree with you, by the way.
