I can’t pull it up readily nor cite my sources, but I recall the chord progressions endemic to emo music being similar to those found in Jpop and their associated anime openings. So those coming of age stories where hard work creates poetic justice would be in the same zeitgeist, attract the same people, and contradict him. This leaving the core of the argument being about whether boys are allowed to cry (No. Nobody cries until the revolution is over, obviously)
