Their solutions suck, I agree. These are designed by people who don’t understand the role social media plays in people’s lives in 2026. They should use parental controls for age-inappropriate content and require age verification to get algorithmic recommendations (if nothing else, to discourage people from doing so).

But the problems are real, and that is the driving force behind this globally coordinated campaign of legislation. It’s not some shadowy cabal of malicious people, it’s a genuine worldwide crisis.

The world is all doing this in a coordinated fashion because social media is causing many, well-evidenced problems.

They made is pretty clear that they think a broad coalition is necessary to support their cause of privacy.

These purity politics are nothing but self-aggrandizement. It achieves nothing towards improving the conditions of the working class and if anything it’s actively harmful.

Fedora does good work on security and it doesn’t have snaps. But personally I prefer the stability of Debian (not that I daily drive it).

But realistically speaking Google already knows the identity of every single user who isn’t actively trying to hide their identity. So the privacy implications are negligible.

The KOSA act, looking at it, is better than a lot of the other iterations of the act. It doesn’t ban people who don’t identify themselves from social media entirely, but gives them an opt-out for the worst features (autoplay, algorithmic recommendations, etc.).

Though if I had my way, these features would be forced off for those who don’t prove their age, and restrictions on adult content would be left to parental controls instead of government ID. But still the KOSA act is far better than what some other countries have implemented (looking at you UK, don’t ban people from fucking wikipedia).
