News@lemmy.world•Leaders alarmed about fairness of FBI inquest into Minneapolis ICE shootingEnglish
35·8 days agoI find it ironic when these organizations use the “bad apple” argument. The term comes from the adage, “One bad apple spoils the whole bunch”, so if you concede that you have bad apples, you concede that your entire organization is corrupt.

World News@lemmy.world•US World Cup boycotts grow as Trump threatens MexicoEnglish
11·8 days agoMy God! What a brilliant deduction! I’m not a soccer fan, so my opinion on something only tangentially related to the sport is invalid and that makes your ridiculous assertion that LA’s World Cup will be miraculously successful if the host country’s teams would just withraw completely valid. Brilliant!
I see that you looked at my profile to try to make this about me rather than your weak argument. You should really join us in dailygames! The daily brain exercises might help you to form coherent thoughts and understand some of the words I just used.

12·9 days ago1 You fail to address the loss of capital invested by the community, as if they all live in Beverly Hills and have money to piss away. East LA assures you that they do not.

Yes, but the state of California still suffers. The locals still suffer from loss of return on their investment. See the “capital invested” part of point 1.
-
Bullshit. Soccer is growing in popularity in the US and excluding US teams is the surest way to deter that interest.

World News@lemmy.world•US World Cup boycotts grow as Trump threatens MexicoEnglish
22·9 days agoHow so? Again, I understand a boycott, but Trump already targets areas with large, Democratic-voting areas (such as L.A.) with ICE and withholding of federal funds. How will a boycott of US teams mitigate the damage done by a failed World Cup?
Spending is projected to top $594 million, with an estimated $34.9 million of tax revenue generated for government entities in Los Angeles County. The most significant sources are the transient occupancy tax and the region’s share of sales tax revenues. At the state level, we project a bump of $22.3 million in tax revenue from FIFA World Cup 26™ being held in Los Angeles.

68·9 days agoI wouldn’t fault anyone for boycotting the World Cup because it’s in the US at this time, but in the end, it will end up hurting California more than the US at large, and that kind of plays right into Trump’s hand.

The researchers calculated that at its worst, people born in the mid-to-late 1960s may have lost up to six IQ points
I was born in the mid-1960s and have a PhD. I really could have used those 6 IQ points in grad school. Shit, I could use them now.

247·12 days agoI love everything about this. They got a bullying letter from the US Navy over something beyond their control, handled it like professionals, turned it into free publicity and a news story, and the reporters got a sheepish “no comment” from both the DoD and Bahrainian officials. chef’s kiss BRB, I think I need to order some butt plugs.

News@lemmy.world•Sen. Mark Kelly fires back after Hegseth threatens his rank and retirement payEnglish
138·13 days agoSo Hegseth, while serving as SecDef (or SecWar, or whatever in the hell he’s cosplaying) is violating first amendment rights of a US senator, veteran fighter pilot, and (get this) FUCKING ASTRONAUT for stating a part of the UCMJ that every military member is taught in basic training?
IMHO, as soon as he’s done laughing, he should make copies for the indictment then frame the original to hang on his wall.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What song should be the national anthem of your country?English
4·16 days agoTrue, but if the government is truly secular and the government chooses its official anthem, then it should be secular as well. And please notice that I used the qualifier “supposedly” in the post you replied to, and the qualifier “should” in this response, so I’m referring what would be appropriate in a secular society and not the dominant religion of the population and their influence on their government.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What song should be the national anthem of your country?English
2·16 days agoHonest answer? I think the current US anthem is fine. Some would like it to be “God Bless America”, but I don’t care for the “god” reference, although it is a better song. Others would argue for “America the Beautiful”. The “God” reference isn’t as prominent in this case, but I think any reference to God is inappropriate in a supposedly secular society. A war poem set to the tune of a drinking song is both appropriate and the best we can do, imho.
