markovs_gun@lemmy.worldto Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Reddit bought giant ads in Paris, urging people to join English1·1 day agoI mean from a business standpoint it makes sense. You make more money selling 5 hamburgers at $21 a piece than you do selling 10 at $10 a piece, as long as costs are similar. Having fewer users you’re making more money from can make sense.
How much do those tapes cost if purchased in bulk? I am trying to figure out how much a petabyte storage system costs, and how much physical space this would take up, and how much electricity it would require to run. I had a lot of trouble finding this information on Google because I know so little about tape storage and don’t know what all I would need. I am probably not going to actually do anything with this but I am curious because I had this idea for a product and can’t get it out of my mind. The most important part (for the hardware portion) is having nearly a petabyte of physical, local storage. I am aware this would be quite expensive and relatively large, but the product would be intended for governments and companies not individuals.

How much did this system cost? I have an idea for a product and one of the key parts of it is having a huge amount of local storage. I would need like 10x what you have though.

This was kind of fad in Judaism for a while due to Israel getting conquered a bunch by foreign powers but it hasn’t been a big thing for like 2000 years at this point

Although I must be honest if I were at work and they said “hey we paid for Grok” I would be pretty annoyed given that the big name LLMs are pretty similar if you’re actually using them for work and most don’t come with the stupidity that comes along with being owned by Elon Musk.

markovs_gun@lemmy.worldto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Ancient food are absurdly complicated.8·4 days agoNah dude just read about the earliest versions of beer and bread and it all makes sense. The earliest version of beer was more like a fermented porridge of malted barley, and the earliest version of bread was like a rough corn bread. Over time people improved both products but it was slow going. The key is knowing that dough and wort will just naturally ferment on their own if left out in the air and that both of those things can be made way more simply than a modern bread made with white all purpose flour or wort made with malt syrup.
The first few episodes suck really bad but it gets better
