2·11 hours agoThis is way more complex to attribute blame to people of specific gender here.
Statistically speaking, at least in my country, women are now more likely to get a degree and move to a big city for work. In the big picture it isn’t because of some affirmative action (there’s some of that but it’s blown out of proportion) but simply because women are more likely to be socialised as diligent, agreeable and therefore more compatible with education and more employable in modern white collar jobs. Men are socialised to be somewhat unruly and aggressive (especially those from rural areas) so they stay behind to look after family farms and other businesses which often aren’t very profitable. This combined with little to no contact with women leads to them looking for something to blame for how their life turned out to be, usually ending with misogyny adjacent political ideology.
Current situation is similar to what suffragettes faced back in the day - they had to convince men but also swathes of women that they deserved equal rights. This toxic masculinity isn’t just harmful for women, it costs men a lot too - shorter lifespans, higher incarceration rates, higher suicide rates etc. We’d all be better off with some other masculinity model but it’s so ingrained into capitalism that both reinforce each other.
I wouldn’t absolve women of blame either. Same as every living person regardless of gender, they tend to look for a mate of similar social standing and are unlikely to compromise because there’s little reason to do so. This has strong classist undertones because that’s what it is. Men can compromise on it but for all the wrong reasons so I’m not saying that anything should be reversed here, rather we should rethink how all of this should work for the benefit of everyone. We emancipated women not because someone thought all humans are equal but because capitalism needed more workers and that’s probably where all of this went wrong.
Brand new communities usually don’t put that many rules hoping to adapt to what users want as they grow. This community isn’t like that - it’s more of a bonsai tree of meaningful news and and while the rules are up for discussion, this focus isn’t. I’ve seen too many communities drift off topic and become low effort content dumps because of influx of new users that have a different idea as to their purpose compared to users who are already there. I’m of opinion that moderators being gardeners and curators of content is the only way to ensure long term viability of spaces like this.
So far this is going as expected, meaning barely anyone is here, but if there’s even a handful of likeminded people here in the future I’ll call it a success.

11·20 hours agoSocial isolation amplified by antisocial media is definitely a contributing factor in declining birthrates. If the cost of living was the only/primary reason you’d have more childless couples but people don’t pair up into couples in the first place. Good on China for not succumbing to at least some aspects of this madness.

Science@mander.xyz•People With Aphantasia Can't Visualize Anything. So How Do They Dream?English
6·4 days agoNot being able to visualise images has no bearing on whether you can conceptualise surrounding space (positions, distances) or you wouldn’t be able to function at all. While aphantasia is not a medically recognised condition and therefore not exactly well studied there’s a lot to suggest it partially overlaps with autism. This in turn would explain tendency for bottom-up thinking - your brain has to systemise everything to understand it. At least that’s my intuition as someone with both.
Apple TV is a premium product and people who are interested will keep buying those because there’s nothing better anyway. Shield TV was last updated in 2019, you don’t really need to update those things that often. AV1 HDR decode would be nice though.

M2 is standard now but there were many before it and there will be many after it. Vibe coding drivers for modems might not be a viable strategy either. Modems are extremely proprietary things that are subject to boatloads of regulations so it’s a bit of a miracle they are running on relatively open systems now.

Technology@piefed.social•Google and Epic give up fighting — third-party Android app stores are coming next week in USEnglish
3·7 days agoConsumers are lazy and big tech exploits it by creating just enough friction to keep them in semi-walled gardens. Enabling installing of an app that’s labeled as „file might be harmful” by enabling installation of „unknown apps” won’t stop my grandma from installing malware but it stops many from even bothering with alternative app stores.
This is cool as hell, thank you for sharing. I’d still be wary of any company promising perpetual support because the true test will be if in a few years down the line there’s a 6G modem you can replace old one with. It’s very hard to have some sort of universal computing device that would be supported forever because eventually there’s no one supplying parts or new ones are not compatible.

17·7 days agoThe older I am the more I notice how capitalism is so ubiquitous that it’s pretty much a religion that’s being hammered into brains of everybody from an early age. Having cartoons becoming ads for toys in the 80s led to irreparable harm for every future generation. It’s unfortunate that using language / philosophy designed specifically to talk about this has been ridiculed to the point of most people having negative knee-jerk reaction to it. It’ll probably take many more centuries of unnecessary deaths until people realise this, similar to other religious mass delusions.
This thread was not meeting 50% quota so while this comment is a bit of a joke it’s also very much serious.
Unless you find a phone with an upgradable modem there is no „buy it for life” one. We’re now at 4th/5th gen networks and many places switched off everything older to reclaim wireless spectrum. LTE and 5G will be replaced too eventually.

91·12 days agoI’m horrified that you’re using Piefed for work.
Have you considered using Piefed client that has „mark all as read” button or „mark as read on scroll” features? Voyager does this, I’m pretty sure many others do. Another approach is to browse content sorted by new. In such setup all you need to know is if content is above or below your scrolling position. Hopefully these can make your work less tedious.
