I also think the name “Early Access” is misleading. You’re really paying to become a beta/alpha tester which also includes a license to the full release when/if that happens. If that is what you want, then that’s fine, and the product page always details the current state and plans, but I still think it’s a tiny bit problematic.

Personally I ignore most Early Access games altogether and only buy if the price clearly makes sense for what the game offers at that moment and that seems pretty rare.

The argument is that “Oh, Windows updates once a month and you hate it? Well, CachyOS has several updates every day which makes it much worse”.

But the real issue with Windows updates is how distruptive, forced, slow, and broken they are. Microsoft gives you some freedom to choose when to update, but sooner or later it’ll say “Oh you’re doing something important? Nope, time to restart right now” if you delay it too long.

I actually update my CachyOS system far more often than I did Windows, but I am in full control of it. But the truth is, while I would recommend people on CachyOS or any rolling release distro to update at least every 1-2 weeks, you can easily go a couple of months without doing so.

CachyOS is also great for gaming, but calling it “a gaming distro” is underselling it for people who do not care much for gaming. It’s a highly optimized general-use distro that is also great for gaming.

But by default it does not install any gaming-related packages, so calling it a gaming distro is wrong. It has a shortcut to install everything most people would want for gaming, and the team also tunes it in ways that benefits gaming, and they also have their own Proton fork called Proton-CachyOS that is in my opinion the best one. Right now it is still based on a relatively old Experimental version because the main dev behind it is taking a break, but it’s normally very up-to-date on everything including new features and fixes.

Plenty of people do not want the “bloat” that actual gaming distros include by default and CachyOS is the best of both worlds. Pretty clean by default, with easy access to gaming tools if you want that.

Yes, their only point is that it looks better “in their minds”, as you say. This feature in particular isn’t meant to improve performance.

Personally I think the more subtle application of it can look pretty good, but it seems hard to control and does more harm than good. And that is even ignoring the massive performance impact that almost guarantees it to be unusable. Nvidia published some performance numbers that looked impressive, but that was using pretty agressive upscaling and 6X frame gen which is stupid because for frame gen to be decent you need a high base frame rate, which they didn’t get on anything other than the 5090 and arguably the 5080, or by pairing the GPU with a lower resolution that doesn’t really make sense for them (like you wouldn’t normally buy a 5070Ti for 1080p).

The title here is misleading. A game not being supported can be completely ok. The vast majority of games ran through Proton on Linux aren’t and they typically work perfectly fine regardless.

As the announcement itself says, they have actively chosen to not enable the setting that would allow Linux, but is working to support it in the future, presumably to get it SteamDeck-verified for the real launch.

It’s a very common publishing strategy. Publishers often try to avoid other launches they expect will negatively impact their sales. GTA 6 will be quite expensive and probably very popular, so trying to avoid that makes a lot of sense.

Why not both? If you think the devs deserve the money then you could buy it and keep playing the pirated copy.

Something not being illegal doesn’t inherently mean everyone should do whatever that is. I’m not saying “you should do that but you shouldn’t do that”. As an example that I truly hope most people would agree with, cheating on your partner isn’t illegal (most places), but it’s still a really shitty thing to do.

Yes, we agree. You should be able to. No one should face legal action until an actual crime has been commited and joking isn’t a crime. But that doesn’t mean doing so is good. I did not say there are things you shouldn’t be able to joke about, just that there are a few topics so serious and tragic that joking about them is bad.

I believe there are a few things you simply shouldn’t joke about. Killing children is one of those things. But yes, everybody has a fundamental right to their privacy and it’s insane that mass surveillance is becoming more and more common and way too many people seem to just accept or ignore it.

Not just that… I’ve met plenty of teachers that were almost completely tech-illiterate and that includes to some degree a few that even taught tech-related classes. Being a teacher doesn’t magically mean you know everything, even within the field you’re specialized in.

I mostly agree, but even if LLMs were 100% correct all the time (they’re not), there are still some pretty serious ethical issues surrounding it. It is up to each person to decide if they find that acceptable or not.

Not if you follow the normal safety precautions for using the AUR. There are several things you can do to look for red flags, but the most essential thing is to read the PKGBUILDs. And helpers like yay, paru and Shelly can all show diffs which makes that much easier after the initial installation because in most cases you’ll just see that the version and checksum has changed which means it’s as trustworthy as last time.

This has always been the case, and will continue to be the case unless the Arch team restricts the AUR which quickly can make it lose exactly what makes it so good.

I tested this a few weeks ago, but one thing I struggled with was having custom fields imported. Don’t know if I somehow did something wrong, but while the export data had them as expected, KeePassXC just didn’t import it all? The standard Notes did get imported, but none of my custom fields.

While I believe most of their results originate from Bing, according to their Wikipedia page they have used over 400 sources including Bing, Yahoo, Wolfram Alpha, Yandex, and its own web crawler. And even if 100% of their results were from Bing, saying it’s “just bing search” is very misleading.
