My question is do I have to learn to play regular guitar (6 strings) or can I jump straight into the bass guitar (4 strings)

As a keyboard player, you’ll probably convert to the bass easier than a guitarist would. Pianists have a better sense of what a bass line is for, and how to manipulate it. A guitarist is generally doing what a pianist is doing with their right hand, while a bassist is doing the left hand.
Get a cheap bass, and experiment with transferring your left hand music theory to it. I’ll bet you’ll take to it quickly.
