I had that vibe too: a bit soulless, a bit off-putting and very clumsy in context. My parody lyrics are still making me laugh: Remember - be peaceful. 'N don’t… forget… to… vote… I think Springsteen’s ego go the better of him and he went on an uninspired autopilot. The people around him surely knew the song was bad in a way that made in impossible to be salvagable. Yet nobody around him had the moxie to say something like “Bruce, um… I think you should start over.”
Maybe he thinks of himself as a Great Man and if you’re around him - you have to remember that at all times. I’ve always admired Springsteen as a songwriter and performer but I don’t respect him as a person. I love so many songs of his from the 1970s until his Nebraska album in 1982. I bet that’s 30+ songs. But for all his “workin’ man” shtick - how can he support people like Obama? What did Obama ever do for the workin’ man?
I’ll never understand the POV of people like Springsteen.
At this point in his career I don’t think Bruce, his team, or even his listeners are all that invested in the quality of his new songs. To them his legacy is secure. For me, the first thing I think of when I hear his name now is the “meet in the middle” superbowl commercial he did a few years back about how we are all just too dang divided (it was an ad for jeep lol)
Hopefully in twenty years I’ll be back to thinking “born to run” instead of “Obama podcast”
