Seems excessive.
I would have been okay with 2 bytes personally.
I thnk it’s ok, in some places like ottawa or montreal there’s a lot of repeater so if someone setup a new one, the risk of collision using 1 byte is high.
I still see a lot 1-byte configs around me. 2-byte is the most common, though, and 3-byte is rare.
I am recommending everybody around me to use 3-byte by default, because even though it gives you the shortest range at only 21 hops, that’s still 14 more hops than the maximum you can get on meshtastic, and you make sure not to cause any collisions with IDs.
