I mean, we also have “bis dann” (literally, “until later”) which never gets an actual answer either. Definitely not a “German” thing to do.
No, that’s not quite right.
“Bis dann.” translates to “Until then [when we meet again].”.
“Bis später.” would be “Until later.”.And if someone says “Bis später.”, I do expect to meet them again on that day.
And the formal „Auf Wiedersehen“ (literally “to our next time seeing each other”) with no answer expected, either.
