Edit: De PVV is niet gewoon een normale politieke partij. Dat we nu met z’n allen net doen alsof dat wel het geval is, gaat mijn pet te boven. Het is treurig om te moeten concluderen dat de lessen van de vorige eeuw niet voldoende zijn geweest om herhaling te voorkomen. Niet gezegd dat er nu al sprake is van herhaling, maar de huidige situatie maakt ruimschoots duidelijk dat we als het erop aankomt er weer net zo hard met open ogen in tuinen.

Een suggestie voor bestemming heb ik niet direct, maar als je toch mag treinen waar je maar wil zou ik niet alleen aan de bestemming denken maar vooral ook langs welke weg je er komt. Er zijn prachtige routes in Europa, ruimschoots de moeite om niet voor de snelste optie naar een bestemming te gaan als er mooiere alternatieven zijn. Met de trein kan de reis zelf meer onderdeel van de ervaring zijn dan op weg zijn met de auto.

Je zal ze niet nodig hebben om te boeken, maar wellicht kan de treinreiswinkel je van inspiratie voorzien.

Goede toevoeging, terecht punt van kritiek.

Het is zeker een goed idee om te belichten wat er goed gaat, al is het maar om te laten zien dat het gewoon mogelijk is. Het energieprobleem is een opgelost probleem. We hebben alle middelen, het is ‘alleen’ een kwestie van uitvoeren. Een opgave van onvoorstelbare omvang, maar zeker haalbaar.

Maar deze positieve belichting onderschat naar mijn idee hoe groot de opgave is. Er wordt triomfantelijk gesteld dat we een ramp hebben afgewend door nu op een schema naar ‘maar’ 2,5 tot 3,5 graden opwarming te zitten. Het klopt dat 5 of meer graden opwarming vrijwel zeker tot een van de grootste extinction events in de geschiedenis van de aarde had geleid, dus dat voorkomen is fantastisch. Maar we zien nu wat de gevolgen zijn van, zo even uit mijn hoofd, 1,1 tot 1,2 graden opwarming. De gevolgen in Nederland behoren tot de meest milde en toch ook hier deze week het bericht dat 2/3 van de akkerbouwers schade ondervindt van extreem weer (ja, ze hadden het aan moeten zien komen en voorbereidingen op treffen, maar dat is een andere discussie). Drie graden opwarming heeft ongekende gevolgen. Letterlijk, we hebben geen idee. Maar zelfs de meest voorzichtige schattingen schetsen een desastreus beeld.

Dus ja, er gebeurt veel en het laat zien waartoe we in staat zijn. Dat geeft moed dat we het probleem aan kunnen. Maar om van 2,5-3,5 graden opwarming op een pad naar onder de 2 graden opwarming te komen is een nog veel grotere inspanning vereist. Dat gaat niet over een beetje extra, maar zeker een veelvoud als niet meer. Dit vooral omdat de beschikbare tijd ervoor in rap tempo aan het verdampen is. Doemdenken helpt niets of niemand. Maar achterover leunen en denken dat we (voldoende) op de goede weg zitten is erg gevaarlijk.

You mentioned that your Design Lab controller(s) use regular batteries. That means they are regular controllers with a custom design. One feature of the Elite controller is that it has a built-in rechargeable battery (you can’t use AA’s with it).

People are talking about reliability issues with the Elite controller which is what the OP ordered. The regular controllers like you seem to mention are generally considered to work well.

You left out a part in that quote, “eventually”. SpaceX have delivered on every NASA contract milestone, most (well) on time even which is unheard of in the space industry. SpaceX have fulfilled their first contract for delivering cargo humans to the ISS and is now on their second contract while Boeing is yet to deliver a single ounce human to the ISS for their first contract that they got before SpaceX got their first. SpaceX delivers, and for a good price as well. SpaceX have never claimed they would make space ‘travel’ 1000x cheaper. Their goal is to make it 1000x times cheaper to lift mass to orbit. Eventually. This is the whole reason for the Starship project. They have made it 5-10x cheaper with Falcon and a working version of the current incarnation of Starship could be 50-100x cheaper. Still a ways to go, but can’t say they aren’t delivering. Nobody else comes close. Which is why SpaceX (the company) will be shooting 90% of all mass to orbit worldwide this year. China (the country) will do about 6%. All other companies and countries together will do the remainder. Why? Mostly because they are by far the cheapest and partly because they are the only ones who can launch so often. Turns out landing a rocket and using it again was a pretty decent idea.

SpaceX have never claimed we would have tourism to Mars soon. Even Elon has not claimed that. At best they would claim it is not outside the realm of possibility within the next few decades.

The accomplishments of SpaceX are undisputed. Which makes it a shame to have such a negative opinion based on so little information in my view. I get a lot of joy from ignoring Elon and focussing on the progress of the company. They do remarkable things. As do others in the space industry and I enjoy following their progress as well.

The how is pretty solid, SpaceX has a very strong track record. The uncertainty is mostly in the when.

It is unfortunate that Elon’s state of mind has become more questionable. But SpaceX is a whole lot more than Elon and they have achieved remarkable things. Just take the Elon presentations with a boat load of salt (mostly concerning the timing) and enjoy the spectacle that SpaceX delivers. It is just ridiculous what they are aiming for and so far they seem to be able to deliver … eventually.

They cut off the engines a couple of seconds before reaching orbital speed for safety. Until they prove they can control the ship on orbit they can’t risk having a 16 floor tall 125 ton steel tower coming down in a random location. This is unrelated to any of Elon’s shenanigans.

There is nobody who knows even the slightest bit about space flight that doubts Starship can reach orbit.

SpaceX has many things to get done to make Starship the fully reusable rocket they want it to be, but picking orbital speed is just about the weakest argument against it.

Maar heil zoeken bij fascisten voor oplossingen van die problemen pakt desastreus uit voor ons allemaal. Wat in Rusland, Turkije, Hongarije en waarschijnlijk later dit jaar in de VS gebeurt kan heel gemakkelijk ook hier gebeuren. Afglijden is heel gemakkelijk. De weg terug naar boven extreem moeilijk. Laat ons dat alsjeblieft bespaard blijven en kiezen voor een betere weg … nu dat nog kan.
