He was very much the Elon Musk of his times, and it’s very possible he would have gone down the same route of extremist views and decisions that completely failed because of his egoism.

Some interesting points, and some things I disagree with.
Firstly it’s annoying he keeps calling it his idea and trying to enforce this concept that the current internet needs to align with his original goals. That’s stupid and ignores that things will go where they go, he can’t control them.
So his first point about centralisation being an issue isn’t that big a grievance. But his second point rings true - the issues around our data and advertising have grown significantly and the Web is getting much worse as a result.
I actually think the solution is just government needs to step in and regulate it, along the lines of what the EU is doing. Realistically I think that’s the only solution that’ll help. Doing some grassroots movement and hoping it picks up steam is just unrealistic. Like looking at Lemmy and Mastadon - they’re great but at this pace they’ll never take over the other giants in the space. You need someone to step in and force the change.
It’s an ok experience. Realistically Reddit was much better before a bunch of changes and Lemmy hasn’t filled that/not sure it will catch up.
I don’t care if it succeeds or not. We’ll all just move on to the next thing if it doesn’t.
Yes of course it costs money - but it’s not my business to run and it’s the business’s problem. I’m not a charity or an investor so I don’t need to worry about whether the business succeeds or not.
So basically, no reason to donate.
Why would I donate?
So what do you want exactly? Do you want the fediverse to remain small and irrelevant forever? Or do you want it to grow and become the dominant space with more bad actors but more useful actors as well?
Because you can’t have both, and you will always have more extremists and shitty views with larger groups. I for one think the fediverse is a better implementation of the social tech for pack of a better word, and would prefer its implementation over the closed wall implementation of non fediverse applications.
But the fediverse already has that lol. I’ve had arguments here with extremists many times.
You won’t just magically cure it by stopping FB from federating. Putting your fingers in your ears and closing your eyes doesn’t make it go away.
Yeah I don’t understand the issue.
People want the fediverse to grow, so FB entering it is a good thing no? Otherwise realistically the fediverse will likely stagnate and always just take up a tiny bit of space.
The more people involved the better. Sometimes I feel this group just wants to shoot themselves in the foot.
Not sure why downvoted… Main reason to have a pet pig is to grow it to eat it.
? Bill Gates seems to be doing a good job and contributing pretty significantly to doing good.
If you make broad statements about every person in a category it hurts rather than helps your cause.
Edit: I’ve replied to many people below but noone has ready provided any strong counter arguments but keep downvoting. Not sure why, as again - everyone is just circlejerking themselves that billionaires are bad and should be killed without actually trying to have a decent discussion on the whole thing. At this point I assume people are just trolling as it seems unlikely so many people are unable to think it through logically.
Are you a boomer?
Just because you don’t like or understand something doesn’t mean it’s not a job. I think it’s a bit ridiculous myself but at end of day it’s no different to being a celebrity for whatever reason and it’s still a job.
I looked up the shittiest TV brand available at my local electronics store and yeah, they do list the width with and without stands.
And if you plan on putting your TV on a table that is way too small, then I’d double check where the stands sit exactly, because it’s not a design problem but a you problem.
People need to stop blaming their shitty planning on “bad design”. It’s the most common sense design that will work in most cases.
Next you’ll have the guy who puts their TV on two separate chairs complain about the bad design of TV’s that only have a single stand in the middle ffs.
This is not bad design, it’s just common sense.
People are way too entitled is the problem and assume that their bad planning/thinking automatically means something is badly designed. Blame anyone but themselves.
OP blaming their shitty decisions on others. Why are you buying something without knowing its dimensions?
Fuck I hate people like this. The answer btw is pretty obvious. From a weight distribution perspective it’s easiest to have two feet as wide apart as possible.
Fuck off. Thanos was a decent person who had a good idea.
Musk is a piece of shit.
