Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Older people (30+) online, what would you advise younger generations in regards to life?
2·7 hours agoUse drugs and kill people?
You need a break.
Popular platforms have big expensive algorithms that monitor user behavior and present content they’re most likely to interact with when they’re most likely to interact with it. Participation in those platforms isn’t a deliberate act anymore.
Normalize scrolling past threads unrelated to US politics if that’s all you want to post about.
Tell everyone I know to STOP teaching old people how to use the internet!!!

Dull Men's Club@lemmy.world•We're having a kid, any dull advice to make it easier for my wife during pregnancy or for both of us once the beb is here?
2·1 day agoIt’s crucial to make sure that you’re not accidentally denying a kid something they need, simply because they lack the skills to tell you what they need.
“I don’t know, can you go to the bathroom??”

Casual Conversation@piefed.social•Do you have some Personal "Hot Takes" that you (maybe) too scared to said online?
2·2 days agoPerhaps not in a clothing store but you sure could smoke in supermarkets in the 80s and shopping carts even had ashtrays on them.
Edit: oops I’m being told that there were ashtrays in the fitting rooms and bathrooms in clothing stores too but as a kid my clothes were cash and carry.

2·2 days agoI’m talking about indoors. You could walk around smoking cigarettes inside the shopping mall. Nowadays most places in the world ban smoking in indoor public spaces and within whatever distance from building entrances. I don’t think there’s a shipping mall in North America that allows smoking indoors.

2·2 days agoIn the 80s, shopping malls had ashtrays at the end of every bench. Every workplace had a cloud of cigarette smoke at every entrance that you had to walk through. It’s much much more socially unacceptable to smoke cigarettes than it used to be.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•I hate how inescapable politics are on Lemmy, but at least nobody's constantly asking how blind people wipe their butt or pick up their dog's poop then completely ignoring me when I try to answer.
121·2 days agoI don’t know if you realize this, but when people say things like “I don’t talk about politics” that’s just a short form of what they really mean, which is often:
I don’t want to talk about politics here.
I don’t want to talk about politics with you.
I don’t want to talk about politics right now.
I don’t want to talk about politics like that.
Surely you have to have seen the changes over the past 10-15 years in online discourse that has resulted in politics invading every available space. It used to be quite easy to avoid political conversations online. And still, a lot of people don’t come online for that and that’s okay.
They aren’t insane. They’re trying to tell you to calm down. Please take a hint and change the topic when someone says something like that.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Older people (30+) online, what would you advise younger generations in regards to life?
6·2 days agoGet off here. It’s documented mental illness at this point. I come from the beforetimes. When I was a teenager, a/s/l was redundant because the BBS was a local call, and if you wanted to see what someone looked like they had to own a scanner, which was rare and expensive. It was liberating to be able to talk to people and make friends without the superficiality of irl interactions.
Modern internet is profit-motivated and monetization is driven by engagement. It takes time and effort to curate your experience to squelch what the platform wants to show you, which is content you’re most likely to engage with at the time you’re most likely to engage with it. You’re not talking to your friends anymore. It’s an isolating experience.
The next time you’re talking to someone or replying to a post, looking for your gotcha mic-drop moment, consider why you came here in the first place. Are you here deliberately, or are you just using the internet service that came with your smartphone? Go out into the world instead. Constant rage is unhealthy. Voting, community moderation, logins, persistent identity, and profiles have made the internet experience way more image-obsessed than the irl experience ever was. Your discourse is being streamlined, not encouraged and diversified.
tl;dr: go find your tribe, your real tribe.
Everything is politics
Blocked.
No, it’s really not. It’s actually inappropriate in polite society to talk about politics outside of certain contexts. Here on lemmy, folks will use every excuse to shoehorn US politics into every thread and every post. It sucks, it’s like there’s nowhere to go anymore online without politics folks throwing in their two cents. I spend more time doing irl activities just to get away from it which is a shame because I grew up on BBSs and the internet and I really like communicating with people this way. Just not about that.
There’s shit on there but just don’t buy it. Temu actually lies about what you’ll get.
