  • Frat boys are college guys who are apart of a fraternity.

Bears are gay men that are fat and/or hairy. (Wikipedia’s words, not mine)

Raves are a type of party with light shows, glow sticks, etc, to produce a certain aesthetic.

Burning Man is a specific week-long party that happens out in the desert. Many camps are erected and it becomes a caravan city, essentially.

The comic is saying that the character who keeps get bad vibes from the bears formerly went to Goth parties and likely had bad experiences from frat boys at those parties.

In this case, though, because burning Man costs a ticket fee and alot of other things to go to, and because all the bears are gonna flirt with every guy and anyone who is even slightly homophobic is gonna get uncomfortable and leave, there are only bears around in the place they’re at.

  • The conversation has to broach:

    • Medical standards groups have our interests at heart even if medical companies do not
    • trans people exist and have a right to live how they like.
    • Children have a right to some self-determination, including figuring out their sexual preference and gender identity.
    • All people deserve affordable health care and affordable housing, regardless of their race, religion, or background.
    • Criminals deserve to be treated as human beings. Jails directly stand in opposition to that.
    • there’s likely more that I can’t think of.

These ‘dialogues’ are not about things the left can morally budge on, and they’re insanely exhausting, especially when your opponent isn’t arguing in good faith. No one is obligated to go through that social stress, and frankly it’s probably easier for most to just physically fight right-wing zealots.

Careful with the noble savage fallacy. Europe was constantly ravaged by disease due to animal domestication, in ways the Americas were not. Many Native American civilizations created insane mathematical, ecological, and civil wonders during their existences. They 100% would have used double-blind studies if they had any major reason to advance medicine prior to Europeans bringing plagues.

  • A thing to note is that it’s socially okay to call people we dislike stupid because our society is naturally intellectually ableist. We are saying that a person has reached their incorrect views because they’re mentally handicapped, rather than pointing to other reasons for their intellectual failings.

At the same time, we’ve grown up in this environment and it’s difficult to remove that kind of language without some habits to replace it.

  • I don’t think it’s bunk to say that many people join these types of communities to enact violent tendencies in a socially acceptable way. This is something that’s been seen before. For example, many Italian anarchists quickly jumped over to the fascists’ side when Mussolini came to power, and a common hypothesis as to why is that they initially joined the anarchists for a chance to commit violent acts in the name of revolution.

I also don’t think it’s far-fetched to say that it’s a good idea to keep these types of people at arm’s length, because it’s likely you won’t be able to rely on them when things start going south.

Edit: sorry, I did just see this comment is a year and a half old. Apologies on giving you a ping that long after.
