Sometimes I forget that the average man is like this. Now I am forced to despair. How are we ever supposed to build a cooperative world when so many people have views like this?
In French, Putin is called “Poutine” because otherwise his name is a swear word. Poutine happens to also be a regional food from Québec comprised of french fries, gravy, and cheese curds. This is very funny.
I have level 2 autism. I will not understand most of your emoji meanings, or subtle tone use. When in doubt, a tone marker goes a long way.

The comments on that thread are terrible. Why did I click? Why am I still reading?

Did we forget to sign you up for the mail-in ballot program? I’ll be sure to correct that with the electoral fraud committee. /j

I think the admins should get over it. Defederating anyone with opposing views is not helping anyone. I especially don’t expect this from World.
How can you not expect it from the instance that preemptively defederates other instances before even interacting with them?

(In response to a .world user complaining that .zip should stay defederated)
It’s the myth of consensual
sexfederation meme, but it’s hexbear, lemmy.zip saying “I consent” and this goober saying “I don’t”

The Communist Manifesto: 120pt font edition

People say that the Space Race was about “beating the commies”, but conspicuously, rockets are also useful for military ventures. If it were only about proving how great capitalism is, we would have a Rail Race.

Have you heard of “fishhook theory”?

We need a Grail explainer wiki page. There’s just too much to summarize from memory.
In the shortest possible summary:

I am now imagining Trump sitting at a desktop computer, hands poised above the keyboard with his two pointer fingers ready to type. Like a maestro, he lifts and then lowers his hands in graceful unison, striking the Alt key and then skillfully entering 0151 from memory. An emdash appears on the screen.
He raises his hands again, prepared to continue his stream of consciousness, then presses Caps Lock before typing a single letter, then pressing Caps Lock again.

The number of emdashes he’s used in recent posts is fairly suspect. Somehow, I don’t think he’s the kind of person who has memorized how to get the correct Unicode character on each of their devices.

Block it if you don’t like it, but some of us rely on Invidious to be able to watch anything posted here.

Why does it say Stargate?

I don’t believe there are any staff aboard the automated trains in Vancouver. Perhaps it depends on historical perception of safety on the system.

This is the part that I think a lot of people forget when discussing making transit free. I have seen how much the contracts cost for payment systems, and how often ticket machines and tourniquets need to be maintained. Having a barrier-free transit system (both physically and economically) is in many ways much simpler.

Normally I don’t look at communities on other instances, but I was bored and I clicked the All button and immediately came across a commenter on Lemmygrad arguing that it would be beneficial to
abort all “disabled fetuses”
So, um, back to Local I go.

Does anyone recognize what app interface is in the screenshot?

Aha! After experimenting with different Invidious front ends and back ends, I managed to find one that works today!
I have seen many videos like this about autistic people over the years and I always wish I could talk to the person directly. I get the distinct impression that the media creators perceive the subjects in a very different way than I do, and that their bias inflects upon the media they create. I can very much imagine a similar piece being created about me, and how much it would misrepresent the richness of my world.
His job looks extremely fun and I am somewhat envious. I adore sorting and arranging small, colored objects like beads.

No, it was a general lament. Many Americans have said this in my presence, quoting Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory, but also believing it earnestly.
Because one has the veneer of civility and the other does not. That’s all liberals truly care about: the veneer of civility that makes them feel better about the violence inherent to their system. Their politicians all the time call for the murder of homeless people through policy, but because they are calling for it through policy, there is a veneer of civility. But if they said that they would like to kill homeless people outright, most liberals would be compelled to decry it because of the lack of veneer of civility even though the results are the same.
The reason we are able to see through this veneer as leftists is because we understand the material reality of those actions’ outcomes.
