The US owner class and the conservative/centrist governments have always hated unions. The Pinkertons aren’t storybook stuff, they’re real thugs who did real violence(and who still exist today). Strike-breaking, incredibly weak laws around protecting people who try to unionize, and aggressive “individualism”(it only serves to isolate people because we’re weaker apart) are all great ways to slowly discourage people from standing up for themselves.

In some ways, people did decide that it wasn’t worth it, but that wasn’t really tied to the union being bad, more out of the fear of being punished. Jobs were shipped overseas, and poor people who can’t afford US-made goods only hastened the downfall of the US manufacturing as they chose cheap products from department stores and allowed all their local equipment and knowledge to rot away.

The graph is pretty on point. Our productivity, all over the world, has been sky-rocketing and pay has barely moved. Even today, unions are still important for keeping various industries held to SOME kind of standard, but they’re rare enough that it’s still not lifting the entire economy.

Make it 70, but they have to live off the same pensions as everyone else after 60 years old.

Conservatives should be radicalizing people and yet there are still hordes of centrists going “yea but maaaaaybe” and conservatives who are just mad at one particular guy but will forget it all right quick.

The only people who were “tricked” by Trump were the hateful and stupid. He learned a lesson, sure, but it was not a difficult one to learn and yet he it took this to finally make him figure it out.

And like most of them, he still won’t truly learn why what he did was bad and will likely do it again.

Yes, I am 1,000% aware that no corporation needs to survive. Telling Arizona Iced Tea, one of the few wide-spanning businesses that’s actually decent, that they need to sell at a loss to make you feel good is immensely stupid and there’s mo two ways about it.

Maybe they suddenly started jacking up their prices to make huge profits and stopped treating their employees decently, but I missed that news in that case.

And we need to be clear that “vacations” does not mean travelling. People will do basic tourist crap in Italy and call themselves worldly, whatever. But people do need money to just exist in their own space without working for a week(longer, obviously). People can’t even be tourists in their own cities and towns.

Not a doctor, but am in various situations where I have to pick sounds out. There’s something very valuable about having a natural example, especially if the person listening has to find that example all on their own.

Right? Same problem in Canada, we bitch and moan and will spend so much energy on so many things but our turnout is dogshit. The last Montréal municipal election had 36%, the last couple Ontario provincial elections had less than half, and the last federal election was only 69.5%. Last time the federal election saw more than 70% was in 1988.

The honest fact of it all is that votes are currently not weighted differently. No matter how fucked things get, if populations said “NO” to these openly corrupt assholes then that would be the end of them. Instead, it feels like nothing will stop idiots from voting for pure evil and nothing will get 30+% of the population to actually pay any attention at all.

People keep saying that, but 1) having a degree is not a sign of someone’s general intelligence, not even close, and 2) it absolutely has a greater effect the dumber you are.

Intelligence is curiosity and being able to have a greater degree of nuance in your thinking. It’s being self-aware, and about being able to understand transferable properties. A LOT of people, regardless of education, struggle deeply with those concepts.

At the very least, activities within the schools will not be participating in shitting all over the children’s brains. That still means something.

Bet he was a huge fan of corporate subsidies, especially when the business was experiencing the consequences of management failure and the reasoning was essentially that they were holding their employees’ well being hostage.

My friends dad is like that. We had a whole conversation/argument one time over a corporations right to basically do whatever it wanted because they had the position of power/ownership. The energy there has been chill since then, but my friend also just moved out into a house, so it’ll be less of an issue.

It’s interesting, with those people, where even the faintest possibility that something positive could maybe be misused is enough to gut the whole thing, but you show imperically how capitalism is used for evil fare more often than for good and they’re chill with that.

3M and DuPont could poison a whole town, cover it up, and then get no real punishment, but if they even THINK about their porn-hungry, homeless strawman that’s enough to burn down their local library. Conservatives are deeply unserious people who cause deeply serious damage.

Whomp, that sucks. It’s about on par, and yea I’ve noticed for a while but unless they’ve changed hands, at some point they do need to survive. In the same way I think wages should go up with inflation, I do understand the need to raise prices from time to time as well. The issue I have is with predatory price jumps, shrink-flation, etc. and doubly when the only people who benefit are the super wealthy at the top.
