Your bait of falsehood takes this carp of truth; And thus do we of wisdom and of reach, With windlasses and with assays of bias, By indirections find directions out.

  • I work in an adjacent space and this is 100% correct, no notes. There is a staggering level of disrespect for the amount of skill and understanding needed to make these kinds of weird chemistries work. I see this level of failure all the time even in simpler and better understood systems than rare earth extraction.

People assume you can just chatgpt up a plant design that works. That is only true for products that are commodities from start to finish, both on the side of the feedstock as well as the desired end product. Copper for example is a commodity once it is copper cathode or copper rolled product. However, when it is ore in the ground, it is unique, having its own grade, quality, impurities, mine setting (e.g. local climate, host rock), all of which require bespoke methods and site specific understanding to make a competitive/financially viable product. Rare earths are similar but even more complex as the industry is less mature.

Assuming significant, coordinated effort, the west is 20-30 years away from having a meaningful and reliable domestic rare earth market.
