AI has made memes incredibly low effort. I miss the days of shoddy photoshop and copy-pasted pixels. The shittiness of the imagery emphasized the sarcasm in a way that I cannot explain.

Tree Huggers@slrpnk.net•Global agarwood trade heavily dependent on wild, threatened trees: StudyEnglish
4·8 months agoI used to tutor Saudi international students in English. Their apartments always smelled of oud smoke. I loved it. It smelled clean, rich, and almost poetic. When one friend returned to his home and family for the summer, he brought me back a little gold box of oud chips. I still have it.
I associate oud with friendship, especially vital friendships across cultures and nations.
I genuinely hope they’re successful in saving the wild trees.

Europe@feddit.org•The Heritage Foundation is receiving proposals from illiberal forces in Poland and Hungary on how to shape the future of the European Union.English
61·8 months agoYeah, I operate on this assumption entirely. I’m pretty sure there was a book published about this idea in the 80s and it was widely read among political leadership.

News@lemmy.world•In Wyoming, the Eastern Shoshone tribe decided to classify buffalo as wildlife. Here is whyEnglish
17·8 months agoI….did not realize they were NOT classified as wildlife. Of course they’re wildlife. You can certainly pen up elk and make profit off of them, but that doesn’t mean they’re the same as cows or chickens.
Edit: also, like, they’re native to this land as wildlife, while cows and other domestics were imported??

7·8 months agoI think that it’s similar to the idea that anti-racism needs to start with white people.
White people have the social capital to stay safe while protesting—thus able to further the cause for longer—and the subjugation starts with white people so they have a responsibility to start the movement.
Rich people have the economic capital to stay safe while protesting—thus able to further the cause for longer—and the subjugation originates with rich people so they have a responsibility to start the movement.

World News@lemmy.world•EU dismisses US demands on food standards and ties to ChinaEnglish
3·8 months agoOh absolutely. I wasn’t even raised on them because my American parents turned down their noses at them. As an adult, however, a coworker introduced me to the brown sugar cinnamon ones…and they happen to be sold at my place of employment, so when I roll out of bed too late to make breakfast….
They are objectively awful, and I experience a mild self-repulsion every time I eat a pack. But the sugar is addicting.

This is why we need feminist activism: prevent men from chaining a woman’s ability to pay for food or housing to his access of her reproductive system (in the form of sex or literally reproducing).
Too bad conservative women don’t recognize that.

Imagine a world where the top priority of the police team (not “force”) was to help and support the people. “Help” includes stopping confirmed bad guys but also includes finding the homeless a safe place to sleep.
Send all police trainees to social work school.
What a world that would be.
