PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•'People Enjoy Surprises' — Valve Is Trying to Dismiss New York's Counter-Strike Loot Box LawsuitEnglish
11·23 days agoI always thought of steam as neutral evil for being a corporation, but that was just plain wrong of me. Compare them to Digital Extreme and the fact they accidentally created a lucrative loot box and prompt remove from the game. They actually called the mechanic a slot machine instead of surprise mechanic.

As far as I know, gnocchi tells you when it’s done, so you are probably right and they just simplify the process so they don’t have to have someone scoping it out.
I really don’t want to be a downer, but the title kind of make this a flawed message. The shark can miraculously hold a football, but the place of the crab is only as a goalie? I believe there’s always a way, but we are not naturally limited to a small set of positions.
Please, people, don’t discuss the new polygraph as if it were more real than the old one. They are both tools, but, also, they are first both lies. It’s just a guess, but I believe there’s probably someone at every stage of the implementation saying it doesn’t quite work like that or that it doesn’t work at all. But who cares? The product they are selling is justifiable exploitation.

Technology@lemmy.zip•Waymos, robotaxis can now be ticketed by California police. But how exactly?English
3·1 month agoI’m pretty sure someone asked that question when they tried to prevent robotaxis on the streets, but someone else got paid to skip the bureaucracy. Now they will collect extra money from the companies for not being road ready.
If they are treating tech flaws as a crime, all the violations come from the exact same driver. Take the license away.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•How common was video game piracy in the 90s?English
1·1 month agoIf it wasn’t free, it was pirated. I remember asking a teacher for a copy of clipper to practice at home and he reacting strangely and saying we would have to ask the director. I don’t remember the details, but I got my copy and learned piracy was okay.
When I was in Barcelona, I did exactly that to eat without spending too much. Two or three blocks away from touristic attractions and I could have nice meals in small establishments with nice people.

Technology@beehaw.org•Report: Meta will train AI agents by tracking employees' mouse, keyboard use
5·2 months agoThere’ll be people that see this as a good thing and not exploitative at all. We are absolutely too used to the people above taking two kidneys and forcing us to pay for the life support they provide that them asking kindly for just one kidney feels OK.
The human brain is not capable of formal logic at this stage.

Technology@beehaw.org•User anger as Amazon ends support for some older Kindles
35·2 months agoKay said she was also concerned about the presence of adverts on some newer, discounted Kindle devices, and how these might alter the reading experience.
Some people still insist you have options and that the market change because of organic choice. You don’t and it doesn’t. Companies are subtle and gently guide you to where they want when it works. When it doesn’t, they push you while thanking you for your support.
To offer some perspective. The Linux kernel will now stop supporting a CPU from 1989.

Technology@beehaw.org•Burger King will use AI to check if employees say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’
4·4 months agoThe secret is going beyond making logical sense to regular people. How does an executive can make it look like their job matters? By offering solutions to problems that don’t exist. They can just pay someone to manipulate numbers and have accomplishments on their résumé.
I think people around here could listen to the whole album if they chose to at FNAC.
I guess it’s a bakeless pizza.
So, they know you are doing something wrong but don’t care, until they care? I believe the judges would rule against the corporations for allowing it repeatedly. They effectively forgive a debt every new purchase.

Technology@beehaw.org•(Meta) What about technology satire or funny pieces?
3·4 months agoIf not here, I don’t know where. If you don’t understand the technology is being overhyped, it’s just a silly joke that doesn’t reflect reality.
Well, if i had any interest in answering phones, I wouldn’t have dismantle them in the first place. Or, for younger folks, the risk of losing contact for installing a custom OS in your phone is not that big.

Technology@beehaw.org•Spotify’s 3rd price hike in 2.5 years hints at potential new normal
2·5 months agoI’m sorry to jump in out of nowhere, but this argument can be used against your top comment in this thread. Some people listen to single tracks, others to whole albums. Am I missing something? I thought you two were just comparing points of view, not trying to decide who was right.

iiiiiiitttttttttttt@programming.dev•have some connectivity issues? just open every UDP port.
31·6 months agoLower ports are reserved, so they don’t want to create more issues when users apply the lazy solution. If problems start days later, people will remember they followed some weird instructions, buy they will forget weeks later.

How long have you tried Linux / Ubuntu before you left it? Have you tried other distros? Your issue is real, but the solution might be something more radical than a small fix. Maybe it’s too late this time, but try some options next time you decide to explore Linux.
