  • Ugh… exhaustion nap. Today really sucked anxiety wise and taking Melbcat out in the yard always flares it up afterwards. I’m just trying to spoil her

    Cancer

because of her surgery in January. It’s minor, biopsy and removal of surface level cancer on her nose and lip, but I’m afraid about the general anaesthetic at her age and whether it’s spread.

Also kicking myself for not dropping my email or number to people on Fb. It might be too late now. I put it off because… I don’t know.

  • Magpie sees cat

That was weird. There was a magpie sitting on the fence just chilling and watching me for ages. I didn’t make any wrong moves so it kind of relaxed and turned its back to me, had a sing, had a scratch.

Then Melbcat wandered out of her spot under some plants and it was paying a lot of attention. But not flying away? I told the bird it was fine, she couldn’t see it, be cool. I turned around acting like the situation was fine, and Melbcat already laid down in another spot. It sat there for a little while watching us before flying off the fence and I heard it singing next door.

She probably would have got swooped if alone though. Hopefully my presence vouches for her but if the magpie hurtles down I might regretfully have to umbrella it

  • Oh we’ve done that. She wouldn’t tolerate it and managed to get her arm out out of the strap style harness, then I bought a vest style one and she refused to walk on the leash. I actually gave away the leash itself after disuse. I still have the vest harness.

I could try again and see if she gets used to it when allowed to just sit but she finds wearing it a stressor. And I wouldn’t leave her outside alone in any circumstance

  • Gesso’d two canvases. Two more layers to go and then I’ll leave them until I think of something. But this dumbarse technique of mine may get more elaborate.

    spoiler

Because I’ve remembered that water based gesso can be tinted with acrylic paint for a toned ground rather than onerously grinding it in, acrylics can be used for quick dry underpainting before putting oils over the top, and gesso can possibly be used in place of Magic White.

So start out with my already modified acrylic wet on wet for the base to get that blended Bob Ross perspective fade and block out some areas, let it dry, and then add in the details with either acrylics or oils (for better texture or to cover any streakiness)?

It would certainly make producing paintings faster. And neither added linseed oil or solvent enters the picture at any point so it is safer fumes wise for people who don’t have a separate workspace and/or have kids or pets.

When something becomes workable I’ll call it “mixed media” and claim it’s a “Masterclass” that allows you to learn multiple techniques in one course. Then sell classes to rich people on Class Bento /s

  • Oh of course there was plenty of thought on how cleanup and disposal needed to be handled and how Melbcat could be protected. That was the top priority.

It almost prevented me trying oils in the first place and led to trying to figure out a technique that involved no solvents or added linseed oil and allowed soap and water cleanup. (It’s a pain in the neck.)

But yeah I don’t know. Hobbies aren’t fun lately. Life has been really hard, a lot of recent heavy happenings, and trying to do positive activities just feels like another chore.

  • I’m really not feeling inspired to paint or draw today. Not feeling art at all. The paint isn’t nicely buttery and I’m feeling insecure about my sketching ability.

I guess there’s always landscapes. I might just gesso a canvas tonight, get one ready to see if that smooths the surface and makes it easier to lay down colour more evenly. It shouldn’t take long to coat one before I have to stop to get the furbaby fed and med.

Also I was actually reading one of the op shop art books and it’s legit to use your fingers to paint. Of course you need to consider toxicity of the colours and wash your hands well after but it helps spread paint thinly over large areas. Something that may be necessary for grounds, and helpful when you aren’t using thinners or mediums.

Me: stressing about technique, tools, toxicity

Respected traditional fine art book: lol just use ur hands bro 🤙

  • I know people don’t enjoy politics in the DT, sorry

It is. I try to avoid focusing on USpol because it’s too much and there’s nothing I can do, there’s been an absolute gish gallop of bad bills and culture wars. But American culture and laws affect Australia and it’s getting harder to ignore.

Of course. I’m talking about being more vigilant than usual and perhaps changing over to a long acting (or even permanent) method juuuust in case.

  • Argh… I’m sorry. Can you have a clear soup with a little cayenne pepper to try and help unblock?

When I had a really bad sinus infection I found it helped the pain and drainage to gently tap above my eyebrows and either side of my nose. Lying on my back with my head slightly tipped back helped drain too.

Raising my head more with pillows made sleeping and breathing more comfortable.

Pseudoephedrine would be good if you can get it but it would be hard to show ID if you can’t go there.

Nasonex is for allergies but worth a go.

    🙁

  • I was sitting out there for so long with Melbcat. Eventually I had to just call it and carry her back inside.

This probably can’t be a regular thing. I’m trying to bring her as much happiness as possible but she can’t stay out there for as long as she wants because it ends up being indefinite, and at some times it’s not smart for us to be out there.

If she goes out again it needs to be on a half hour timer and only when it’s appropriate.

    Reason - it’s not safe

I can’t have catproofing. 2-3 hours of sitting was past my endurance and I ended up lying flat on the concrete trying not to pass out with exhaustion. And while we were outside, a nutjob neighbour (who used to frequently attack people and tried to harm Melbcat in the past by throwing poison bait into my yard) was moving around nearby.

I ended the outside time to ensure I didn’t accidentally fall asleep with the cat loose and them around.

This why I’m so reluctant to have us sit outside. I can’t reliably supervise and don’t want her escaping, especially around this person.

    spoiler

Also the way that commenter talked to me yesterday was kinda weird and fucked. Dropping in as an American on an Aussie thread to make a random aggressive comment, act as if a structural issue was a personal failing, and then tell me I was making excuses about having a disability… not cool.

In future I shouldn’t be so chill or justify myself to randoms, just save my energy and block.
