collapse@lemmy.zip•The real American household poverty line isn’t $31,200, it’s around $140,000.
2·2 days agoAt this point the minimum wage also needs to be tied to inflation. Might as well bring it up to match productivity increases while you are at it.

collapse@lemmy.zip•The real American household poverty line isn’t $31,200, it’s around $140,000.
2·2 days agoThis all assumes there is no inflation. At some point the system breaks mathematically, even with a steady 2.5% growth rate (which it is not at all accurate but that’s another topic).
The ownership class is planning wealth on generational levels. This represents a significantly larger amount of capital over a longer time frame.
Capping the allowed maximum salary doesn’t even begin to remotely address taxes on corporations and trusts. The wealthy do not pay themselves a high salary , their money is managed through funds.

politics @lemmy.world•Dems eye new way to shake up 2028 primaries: ranked-choice voting
1·11 days agoI agree. I am for RCV, but pretending that it is a solution to the broader problem is delusional.
The issue surrounding voting are well known: everything from IDs and voter registration, local polling stations, gerrymandering districts, voting during the week, purging voter roles, vote by mail, digital voting machine security, lack of paper trail etc. Not to mention campaign finance laws and citizens united and corruption.
None of that is addressed by switching to RCV.

politics @lemmy.world•Dems eye new way to shake up 2028 primaries: ranked-choice voting
6·11 days agoThis doesn’t fix the electoral college or the state electors corruption. It just changes how they’re gonna ignore peoples vote for the popular vote anyway.

Europe@feddit.org•Germany Stack: Only Free Software Enables Digital SovereigntyEnglish
3·11 days agoNot about free software, it is about capitalist greed and corporate software.
Just because something is free doesn’t mean it works better or doesn’t come with other issues.
It just means that the developers aren’t trying to fuck you over and squeeze every cent of profit from the customers while making the product complete shit.

Europe@feddit.org•EU backs away from chat control - XpostEnglish
4·11 days agoAnother solution is to create a tier of curated content that is only available for kids as opposed to full access to the whole uncensored internet.
Parents would setup the access level for devices since they obviously know their kids age and maturity level. Parents would be held accountable and in control of what their kids are able to access and therefore filter the internet.
As opposed to censoring the whole of internet reality by forcing every developer and adult to prove their age and identity. There would be no reason for children to be allowed on chat apps at all that are not fully monitored by their PARENTS as opposed to by the government.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Baby boomers' property tax revolt
72·20 days agoThe most boomer attitude ever. I don’t want to pay taxes that support the community because I don’t have kids.
Fuck you and your entitlement. You are not an island and can’t just decide to pay for whatever services you deem necessary. How do you think roads are maintained and fire stations funded? Or the police?
You want to go back to private fire departments who serve only the rich who pay them instead of public services?
