Buy a second hand laptop and install Linux on it. You’ll be happier and so will the planet.

Another shitty AI product nobody has asked for? That shits the bed all while it also invades your privacy? Wow what a total surprise! /s
I hate Meta as much as the next guy, but I can’t believe that this guy handed over his info, gave the AI full permission to act on his behalf, and then complained that it did the job he asked it to. Albeit differently than he expected, but it did the bloody job. I want to call him an idiot but he’s really just ignorant about what AI is, and I suppose that’s not his own fault.

The issue is IMO really the underlying casual model. What causes what?
In the first sentence, it sounds as if vaping causes worse mental health. But later it is stated more softly as a statistical association, i.e. not causal, which is really hard to show on real world data.
My hypotheses would be that there is an underlying condition that affects both vaping and mental health, namely social deprivation.
It’s disappointing from a premier scientific publisher, but very, very common mistake when interpreting statistics.

It’s ironic that Trump’s oil war is driving decarbonisation by pushing up oil prices. But I guess him and his friends are making lots of money on US oil.

The UK is a surveillance state. I have worked in the HE sector there and participated in mandatory Prevent training. It is a text book mechanism for totalitarian control. It doesn’t surprise me at all that they also track negative attitudes towards their thought control machinery.
I think the only people buying this are Trump himself and his supporters. Nobody in Europe really gives a shit about the US anymore.
We fought in US oil wars in the nineties and naughties. But I think that’s over. I have never seen such strong anti US sentiment in Europe as I am seeing now.
Don’t drink the cool-aid.
I grew up in Greenland. The new agreement is the old agreement. The US has had the right to have as many military bases af they want since the second world war.
But Trump of course claims this as a huge victory. Who cares 🤷

Homophobia is shitty, whether used against Putin or not.

I mean I agree that AB testing is normal, and not really anything to start clutching your pearls about.
Yet again Lemmy shows that much of the userbase is young and has little general knowledge.
But this is a pretty patronising statement, mate.
I get what you mean. But. Since I have become a parent I have realized that not all of these incidents are simply inconsiderate. Sometimes mistakes are made in desperation.

Wow that is one extremely aggressive response to what I thought was a relatively sensible comment. I’m sorry if I upset you.
It’s not whatsboutism, it’s a question of scale. Attention is a finite resource, and I think you should place it where it matters most.
There is a post-colonial dimension to Grindadráp that is rarely mentioned by the media. And that matters more to me personally than the lives of the whales.

It’s the same story every year. And it’s a bunch of pearl clutching second grade journalism, if you ask me.
These are animals that have lived free, beautiful lives in their natural habitats. Then they are killed and eaten, with no deliberate cruelty involved. Circle of life.
If we want to reduce animal cruelty, look towards the massive scale of factory farming, not at the 700 animals that are hunted by a small indigenous community.

Thesaurus? Someone brought out the glossary for this one

How come? Fascist AI slop is both fascist and AI slop, so I struggle to find any redeeming qualities.

Here you go:
If all goes to plan, the section of Oxford Street that spans from the western end of Selfridges to just past IKEA will be completely closed to vehicles (including cars, buses, taxis, bikes, scooters, and pedicabs).

I don’t know, I don’t share your pessimism. In my personal experience, most hardware isn’t unhackable. Apart from iPhone / iPad (where hardware and software are non-standard, and also made by the same vendor) I struggle to find any examples.
I have installed Linux many times on Chromebooks, where there is some BIOS module that checks for OS “authenticity”, but that can be disabled. I have flashed ROMs on android devices many times too. It’s sometimes a bit inconvenient, but nothing remotely close to impossible.
