I’m not sure they’re mad. They’re just afraid. They’re afraid to become a target. They’re afraid that you’re right and they are contributing to the end of humanity. They are afraid they won’t be able to get ripe oranges in February. But until it directly affects their daily lives, they’re content to turtle up and ride it out.

War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.

I’m always baffled by the people who are like, “Why is your protest disrupting my life?! I’m just trying to go about my business, get to my job, and pay my bills. What are you trying to accomplish other than making me hate you?”

Yeah, that’s the point. You’re supposed to hate the protest. It’s supposed to disrupt business as usual. The thing that everyone else is upset about, they want you upset about it, too. The point of a protest (among others) is to find the people that say “not my problem” and make it their problem.

A protest without disruption is just shouting.

You make some good points, and restorative justice does seem to be a reasonable concept. I’d completely agree with you, if it hadn’t taken 13 years to get here. That’s 13 years of the murderers proclaiming their innocence. One of the three murderers died before he was forced to admit his own guilt.

Agreed to because it was the closest thing to justice they could get. 13 years is a long, weary road. Its a high school graduation, a college graduation, a marriage, a grandchild. It’s 13 Christmases and 13 birthdays and 13 years of memories that were stolen from them by murderers.

The family supported it because it was all they could get, and a guilty plea meant that at the very least the murderers would have to admit that they murdered their son. Punishment wasn’t on the table, because black lives don’t actually matter.

Except the xenomorph is an animal, a remorseless killing machine. Kill it, and it’s dead. It’s acid blood might burn a hole in the hull and turn all the astronauts into iced spaghetti, but its death is the beginning of the end of the problem.

Trump is not our monster. He’s a symptom of the problem, like an infected cyst that forms due to autoimmune deficiency. His end will not make American great again. Our government needs to be able to function and expel infections like Trump without a violent coup, otherwise we’re just kicking the can down the road. We need a United States that can maintain its governmental functions regardless of who is in the seat of power, one where criminals are imprisoned efficiently until they can be rehabilitated, even if that never happens. As cathartic as it might be to see enemies punished, vengeance is not justice. Creating a system that cannot be capricious or vengeful is the only way to prevent despots from being capricious and vengeful. If we have learned anything, it’s that we cannot rely on our representatives being decent people with good intentions.

That makes sense to me, and I think scientific research is frequently confirming or debunking things everyone assumes are true. I just think it’s not particularly newsworthy.
