For the 0.0.1 version I will just have a minimal but slightly configured KDE Plasma, but in 0.0.2 I do plan to make a wider range of desktop environments and/or window managers available to be selected. To have some pre-configured options like “regular old KDE” or “non-facist tiling WM” along with some just vanilla out-of-the-box options like GNOME, Cinnamon, COSMIC and so on would be perfect.

0.0.1 is supposed to be the kind-of unpolished proof-of-concept release with just one “forced” path both visually and under the hood. 0.0.2 is supposed to be a visual and QOL release where your help would tie in perfectly with more DE/WM selections, prettier UI (especially the calamares is looking as basic as a matcha-latte). 0.0.3 will be the same for the technical side with more choices for the components instead of forcing my current stack with systemd-boot, systemd-bless-boot, ostree and so on as I realize that not everyone wants to have that much systemd based stuff (me included, but this was the most reliable way to implement it for 0.0.1).

CachyOS does already provide a wide range of options, but their development has kinda come to a standstill the last few months. Some of my PRs have been sitting there for two months when I decided to delete my GitHub and move to Codeberg permanently. To breathe some fresh air into the available options will be a fantastic move, I’m looking forward to your reply!

Edit: I don’t wanna talk bad about CachyOS in the slightest, they have done outstanding work, but you do notice them not keeping up as much as they did before, just saying.

Hell yeah, my favorite font by far. Yes it’s a little ugly, but it makes me so much less irritated on my PC because I can actually read it. If I’m on my phone it’s such a pain to read “normal” font compared to my PC.

No offense taken, but I didn’t use btrfs snapshots in a minute and spent 200 hours in the last 18 days working on my distro with a little less than adequate sleep due to my ADHD keeping me awake, thinking about what to implement next. Please cut me some slack haha

True, if you set it up out of the box with CachyOS it rolls the entire disk back, but I forgot that option was a thing, my bad!

Haha, I know I know, yet another Arch-based distro in this economy, but I really feel like this does fill a gap, thank you for your interest!

On the other hand, perhaps the distros like this are meant to be installed by someone skilled to then be used mostly unattended by a regular user.

My aim is to make this both appealing for the normie who just wants to use it like “SteamOS but with CachyOS speed” and run Flatpaks on it AND for the more experienced user who wants all the benefits of Arch but with a little more peace of mind.

how would you know what’s a working state, so you need to return to the previous one?

As the website explains, it automatically falls back to the last working state if it doesn’t boot, but obviously it can’t detect if something is messed up but still booting like in your example. In that case you just reboot and manually select the last working state (wip but kinda working already) just like a BTRFS snapshot, BUT it only rolls back the system itself, NOT your files. A BTRFS snapshot will also roll back your documents or whatever so my system, when it’s stable and tested, will be superior in every way to BTRFS snapshots.

Most of the time it’s just the software engineers of the company being forced to look productive so they have to move stuff around just for the sake of it so they don’t lose their job. It’s sad, even they realize that the new version is a step back, but the stakeholders can’t accept that and require something “fresh and exciting” all the time.
