I think it’s because it reads like every other self-aggrandizing LI post. Even if I agree with it, my brain just goes “This is an ad. You’re reading an ad.” It comes off as cheesy and phony, because I know it’s just there to farm engagement. I have to ask myself whether they even believe what they’re writing. I will say this comes off as more convincing than, say, those managers who post stuff like how the right way to treat your employees is to not micro-manage them and don’t force them to come to work when they’re sick. That’s what I thought, too. TBH, I had to read that article 3 or 4 times before I could make any sense out of it. With a 11-1 hung jury, I just assumed that 11 people thought she was guilty and 1 thought she was innocent. Turns out, it’s the opposite! Public opinion had already convicted her, but her defense must’ve had a great case.

It’s been a long time since I read Anne Rice, but one of the things that I remember about the vampires is they couldn’t have sex. Of course, you don’t need to have sex to be gay, but the impression I got was that vampires were so beyond human that they were also beyond our conventional ideas of sexuality, too. Also, vampires don’t have many choices with who they get to hang out with for hundreds of years, and of course you’re going to feel a close bond with the vampire who turned you, so…yeah, if they aren’t gay, they’re at least queer. Probably pan-sexual would be more accurate. But it’s only emotional, because, again, vampires can’t have sex. But, hey, they can drink blood, and the way blood-drinking is described it sounds better than sex, so there’s that.

A therapist should keep that shit to themselves, regardless of what their political beliefs are. My psychiatrist is a Catholic, but if he started telling me that I should go to church I’d be looking for a new psychiatrist.

However, if you want to be happy, satisfied, and go through life being comfortable and not require therapy, then self awareness is most definitely not a good thing.

I have to disagree. Self-awareness made me feel better about myself, not worse.

You know what requires therapy? Having a gnawing sense that you’re a failure or a coward or something like that. That’s what a lack of self-awareness will get you. That is to say, you’re going to have some opinion about yourself no matter what, and without self-awareness it’s going to be a distorted one.

Holy shit, your therapist should not be debating politics with you! That’s right up there with your therapist trying to convert you to their religion or praying with you. That’s a line that shouldn’t be crossed.

I’ve never heard of this technique. The one CBT technique that I know is labeling your thoughts (according to the type of cognitive distortion) and countering them. If you do it long enough, your thinking is supposed to change. Changing any habit is difficult, though.
