    The fediverse is a great digital third place because it’s so open, owner-maintained, relaxed, non-corporate, and non-profit. It’s rare to see any form of ads in my experience, except for people talking about their creative work.

    It’s not really a place to make money, for all its charms. If you’re looking to make money, you go where the people are. We’re a great crowd, but there aren’t many of us and well, we’re not here to see ads.

    Good video. I wish the host would add chapters to his videos. 26 minutes is kind of a long video and it would be great if I could skip all the off topic stuff.

    Anyway, the title is kind of misleading. It’s not really about monetizing as in making a profit. It’s about bringing in enough money for the instance admins to cover their costs - for the instance to be self sustaining without the admin paying out of pocket. That doesn’t have to involve ads.

    So all the people drive-by downvoting just because you see the word monetize. Please stop.

      I think some form of monetization is going to have to come to the federverse at some point. Money is what driver 95% of the internet. The point is making it sustainable and ensuring the money goes to the creators rather that a couple of greedy pigs that own massive corporations that have literally taken over the Internet. The internet has become what we see in geopolitics today. Lots of authoritarian, sovereign and non democratic countries. The Internet was born as an expression on democracy. In liberal democracies, you have (sustainable) capitalism that does not leave anyone behind (social welfare). The federverse is our hope to take internet back to the users but extremist ideas (no monetasation) will make this a missed opportunity. I hope someone is thinking about this.
