I’ve the opportunity to watch it and i want to know if it’s worth it or not, because game-based shows are known to be not that great.
Edit : at the moment i write this, im at episode 3, they seems to have respected the game’s lore even if i disagree with the cause they choose in the scenario to force the hero to left the vault.
I’ve only just got done watching the first episode but I’m really enjoying it so far!
Finished episode three and it’s good. Credentials: played every Fallout game ever made.
The only i have not played are Fallout 1 & 2
I feel like the protagonist reminds me playing the original Fallout games. You’re on the move and it’s real easy to die. You aren’t some immortal god.
I don’t like this kind of TV show but I really liked this one
Binged it in one night, I enjoyed it a lot.
Watched the first ep and it’s pretty good. You can really tell the writers played and appreciated the game
So far so good 3 episodes in.
The look and feel of the world is great.
The characters are pretty believable.
Writing is good so far.
Is the writing like fallout though? Or is it gonna just be some soap opera like the walking dead?
Not soap opera-y at all imo, 4 episodes in. It’s great, it feels like the fallout world 100%
Trust me… The writing is very much with the same dark/silly humor as the game. You even get characters ignoring their main quests and going to clear side quests.
I just watched the first episode and I’m pretty pleased. However, my friend watching with me had never played the games and I’m sure was rolling their eyes each time I said, “that’s in the game, that’s in the game!” And my reflex to hold my thumb up the moment I saw Vault Boy with that lasso.
Having a hard time sticking with it, partway through episode two. It seems very tropey and cliched, which I guess is part of the feel of the franchise. For some reason I don’t feel drawn into the story.
The first 3 episodes are written by one person, the last 5 are 5 different writers.
I think they nailed the design aspect, everything looks like it would belong and doesn’t look cheap or fake.
It starts off good and then suffers from some odd writing choices and feels rushed and not natural or fluid as you get towards the end.
Great actors, decent story, great design, overall a 7.5/10 for me.
It’s good.
If you’ve never played the games, it may take a few episodes to figure out, but my kids (who’ve never played) enjoyed it.
The universe has so many characters, factions, and creatures that I would say not even 1/4 are in the first season, so there is a lot of in universe room to expand and explore story-wise.
Not often I say this about new streaming series, but I highly recommend!
Should I play before watching? I heard there are nice inside jokes, is that true? Which Game should I play, all?
I haven’t watched the TV series, but I’m a big enthusiast of the games.
I’d say start at the start, especially if you’re alright with more old-school games. The first two are (sometimes punishingly hard) isometric RPGs that I personally had a blast playing. Some of the later games have little references to them that you might miss, too.
Get Fallout 2 on GOG instead of Steam if you can, the version on Steam is the censored European version that removes all the child characters and quite a bit of content with them (since you had the option to kill them in the game’s open world environment, despite the game heavily penalising child murder).
If turn-based combat and 90s graphics really repulse you (totally fair, I know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea), you could try playing the 3D games instead, which are essentially first-person RPGs with FPS elements. Fallout 3 is alright, the story isn’t that good, and the gunplay just feels a bit off, but the environments are really well-crafted and are fun to traverse.
If you have to play one Fallout game though, I would pick Fallout New Vegas. It’s mostly made by the guys who made the first two games, and they really really knocked the ball out of the park. It’s still got the slightly awkward gunplay of the third game, but everything else is really well done. The story especially is probably one of the best video game narratives I’ve experienced (putting it up there with those of Disco Elysium and Undertale).
I haven’t played Fallout 4, so I can’t really give you any recommendation there.
Seconded.
I’ve played most of the games.
New Vegas is best for overall gameplay.
Personally, I like 4 best, but that’s because I played it first and the newer interfaces and voice-acting integration is smoother (it’s a newer game, so this is kind of th point). But, everyone I’ve talked to says New Vegas is the best, and I have to agree.
Your kids? 😅
His kids could be any age.
That’s true too. Thinking about kids less than say, 15, watching this show is what makes me wonder. The level of violence is shocking to me and I’m over the hill. Can’t imagine how it might hit to someone in their formative years.
Watched 6 episodes and I think I’m done. It’s boring and very contrived and simply written. I’m not enjoying any of the characters or performances either
The prop and costume design is well done. That’s about it
Also, they erased the New California Republic despite setting the show in California. Not sure why Bethesda hates ideas that they didn’t personally create, but it’s very off-putting
Sounds like the average Bethesda-Fallout
The NCR plays a big part in the show. I think that revelation is in episode 7 though.
I agree on the plot being contrived, but I still enjoyed it regardless. That could just be because I’m a huge fallout fan though.
I watched episode 1.
I’m delighted they kept the feel and aesthetic of the games. I thought they might change it and just be Fallout in name.
That being said, I thought the majority of the show was boring, slow, directed poorly, and I just didn’t buy most of the characters and therefore didn’t feel anything for them.
Watched the first episode and thought the pacing was slow. It was the first episode lol
