What’s important is not what the Tiananmen Square protesters were standing for, it’s that they stood against the government, which is unacceptable!

More seriously, the protests and demands of the student protesters were multifaceted, but opposition to Dengist reforms were widespread in the protests, yes. However, many of the protesters were also strong supporters of the recently deceased Hu Yaobang, who was a strong supporter of Western style liberalization.

Wouldn’t it be a return to the left KMT democracy party that Sun Yat Sen was part of.

I mean technically (as is common) it was the right wing Nationalist who went after Mao and did the Shanghai Massacre, then those Right Wing Nationalists became the antidemocratic military dictatorship in Taiwan for 25+ years…

…just seems like there a pro-democracy argument that could be salvageable there. But I guess what centrist Maoist in China mean by democracy and what a westerner means by democracy aren’t going to be the same thing.

I guess I just hope the future drifts to the progressive left everywhere.
