Image is just a random crossdresser (self-identified) I thought looked cool. Month long megathreads for smaller comms, that are only pinned in the comm, is something I was talking about in the moderator Matrix chat. c/anime already does something similar, so I figured c/fashion could do it too.
If you have any suggestions about how I could change this megathread to make it more fashion related, that would be greatly appreciated (i.e. like how the c/anime megathread is explicitly for suggestions/what you’re watching).
I’d also love it if people could make posts that are guides for fashion. I’d pin them in the comm, at least for a while, and if they’re good enough I’d try to get it pinned sitewide. We don’t have a wiki, so it’d be greatly appreciated. c/fashion doesn’t just have to be pictures of fits.
Talk about whatever you want, as long as it’s fashion related. There’s plenty to talk about that might not warrant a whole post.

I’m not in that culture but why not ease into it with black versions of your existing wardrobe?
Since I was a kid ive just been finding whatever clothes I can and customizing them, because hot topic was too expensive. I still find goth clothes made by brands to be too expensive! I would only buy from the discount racks. I have had some mild success with ebay buying used / second hand, sometimes the big names pop up on there. Also local flea markets sometimes have more alternative looking clothes with small sellers curating alternative / gothic looks (look for ones that cater to queer / punk / alt ppl.) And of course just looking at every clothing as if it has the potential to become gothic & customize them (if you have the desire to do so.) i hear that many 80s-90s goths had to make their clothes. You can dye clothes black and add spikes to them :)

I love the feel of linen beachcomber type pants but imo they’re not appropriate for anything but hella casual events. I’d love some with a bit more formal look (i.e. not white, no drawstring) so I can go comfort mode on the sly. Where can I find these? I’m a USian btw. I guess I could get white pants and dye them but that’s more trouble than I wanna get into right now.
Ive seen more structured linen pants here n there. Most recently at one of these discount seconds places, I don’t know the brand name.
Gotta wait for summer and get lucky some year with linen being in style.
If you’ve never dyed before, its not easy to get a 100% perfect result on a garment, especially for a dark color (and especially especially for black). Don’t make your first attempt an expensive item you will be disappointed if its imperfect. And remember that while linen can be easily dyed with reactive, the thread is almost certainly polyester so you will end up with contrast stitching.
My issue with linen clothes is they wear out quickly. I have a whole stack of linen stuff to repair. I know high quality linen fabric exists but its probably way out of my price range to buy anything made of it.
Thanks for the advice, been starting to keep my eyes out locally and online for second hand items. Sounds like dyeing linen is definitely more than I wanna chew on right now, seems like I’d also have to get lucky with a favorable contrast. Maybe some day!
You have experience with lyocell fabric? I picked up a shirt made of a linen/lyocell blend and from what I’ve read it can be more durable than plain linen. It feels great for what that’s worth.
It’s not that linen is difficult to dye, it’s easy as fibers go. It’s more the fact of using an already-made garment. Cotton would have all the same issues. Also non-new is more difficult because prior to dye you need to remove every single iota of dirt and oil or the dye won’t take evenly. It’s not easy because you can’t see it before dying. One reason why “tie dye” is more a beginner-friendly process because such imperfections are integrated into the overall effect.
No I don’t have any lyocell. What is the % and do you find it as comfortable as linen?
Understood, thanks. I’ve done exactly one tie-dye in my life and it turned out killer, but as you say it’s very forgiving.
The shirt’s 70/30 lyocell/linen. I don’t know much about the stuff but I understand it’s made from wood fibers. It feels really good so far, extreme comfort, but I just got it so time will tell as it wears. I dunno anything about the brand (Truth) to know if its quality is typical of blends like this.
The constant struggle between my desire to wear super distressed and worn/repaired vintage clothing and my spouse greatly preferring me in clean and neat clothes is resulting in some form of “clean” wardrobe with workwear elements

I wear a size 36x30 and I saw some awesome distressed / repaired big pants in the thrift store but I didnt know they would fit me at the time 😔
Aww, that would’ve been great! I found a pair that I really liked but the size they offered scales length with the waist, so my waist size would be too short but my length fit was too big
