for legalism i don’t mind the terminology being broader. things besides hate could be motivating; or offenders could credibly deny hating, like a chaser, while being incredibly racist or -phobic.
It makes me feel less safe having people soften the language. Those other cases should get their own word and hate crimes should be left alone. I do not trust the people that came up with this at all, they wanted to soften the language and used some fringe situations where the language doesn’t apply as a means of softening the language for ALL situations.
So yeah it’s literally a word to replace “hate”.
