    This is a really excellent piece, with how it lays out the “excorporeal” nature of imperial control.

    The State still does not primarily rely on a broad national productive tax base. It can therefore survive despite popular distrust.

    I’m not sure about the strength of the implication of this argument, that a tax base that is distrustful will overthrow the government. But it’s at least half true.
