Great Lakes region, USA. April 2026.
I went out to a favorite nature preserve to see what new birds have migrated back. I didn’t see anything new, but there were dozens of song sparrows and red-winged blackbirds singing away.

Boring looking birds, but I love their song.
You only think them plain as you see them so many times. Coming from the UK (where, OK, are birds tend to … subtle … in appearance), those are some pretty little birds.
Yup, very plain Jane, but a quintessential sound of spring and summer. Days wouldn’t be nearly as beautiful without their song.
Yeah, we’re still under a half meter of snow here. We won’t be seeing them for a while.
