Potato-linked financial contracts have risen over 700% in a few weeks, despite a current oversupply in Europe, due to speculative trading surrounding the volatile environment caused by the Iran war.

Not futures, CFDs, considerably more fucked up. Don’t think CFDs are even legal in the US.

Basically a cash settled futures contract

Idk why it’s considerably more fucked up but I’m guessing maybe because there’s no physical delivery it serves even less of a purpose for people hedging their physical goods and just blatant financial speculation on prices of goods?

Dump potatoes in the rivers and place guards along the banks to keep the hungry people from fishing them out.

The people come with nets to fish for potatoes in the river, and the guards hold them back… and they stand still and watch the potatoes float by.

Since 21 April, the cost per hundred kilograms has risen from approximately €2.11 to a staggering €18.50.

€2.11 for 100kg seems ridiculously cheap.

I’ve seen advice on this very web zone that the cheapest possible way to stock your pantry is to take a barrel out to your nearest bean farmer and pay him fifty bucks to load it up from his silo. It’s 20x more than he’d get paid for the amount you take and you get fifty gallons of dry beans to tide you through the end of the world.

I believe the buyer is responsible for taking delivery of the potatoes, so they have to pick up/pay for delivery and deal with all the logistics of what to do with all those potatoes

Many farms are speculative real estate assets that rely on government subsidies to stay afloat

The potato is like the most productive dirt cheap crop. What is that going to mean for everything else?

So is this a big change in the actual cost to get a potato in your hand or is this just a change in the futures contracts? You can sell the futures contracts on to someone else for more money so if it’s just a change in the value of the contract, it doesn’t have as strong relation to the actual price of getting some mash in the mouth.
