First big customization job. Repainted everything to a darker tone, added weathering. Did a lot. Out of box it looks like this

This took almost 2 months. Totally worth it. Im super proud if it.
This looks amazing
Thank you! Ive only done little touch ups with paint before this kit and decided as I went to go full hog on learning a shitload of techniques at once. I am like…so hyped my fucking aroind and finding out on several fronts all worked out. This came out exactly how I envisioned for the most part. Ive always beem good at drawing but painting has always been a bit of a weak point as well as color. So I am fucking HYPED about the results. I was pretty bad at painting before the desire to do this model justice came to me and I learned like…so much much doing this. A straight build of the kit with panel lining looks like this:

I repainted all the white bits with a much darker off white (i mixed all of the colors myself for the whole thing), did the inner frsme with a mix of metallic silver, black, brown and green, its mostly covered but you can see it poking through. That fucking orange was soooo high vis. That took 2 goes. My first ine was too many layers to figure out how to get the shade just right and imply its been in a jungle cause the show its from tskes place in a jungle. Gundam armor doesn’t rust which i took into account and tried to make things look more like dust that got rained on, dried, rained on and dried again and used super thinned out brown and grey for that as well as dry brushing green and brown mixes for the smears armor would get walking through a thicc canopy. And cause theyre 60 feet tall I made very sure the top was a LOT cleaner than the bottom. The battle damage is drilled into the armor and then colored in for full depth. I went all out on this one.
Next build is really nice looking on its own and I wont be fucking with it nearly as much, but ive gotten to enjoy older models cause there is so much to improve.
Looks like ass. JK I had a bunch of these as a kid and could never do more than decals and line work. This looks great.
I only started 6 months ago. If you ever wanna try again, its shockingly cheap. Building gunpla has made like…a HUGE positive impact on my life because I always have a project I enjoy hust for myself with an but of outside guidance. I like drawing and music but they can be so open that I wanna do either but have no direction and then fucking around turns to nothing. Model kits have structure but are open ended. It just feels cool to bring your own unique thing to life and the internet is co cause you can see the work other people did and get ideas. Look at this cute ass Zgok!

I actually broke the painting seal because of the shit ass decals on the Hg Zeta. It was my 2nd kit and I fucked it all up and retried and when it got to those decals on the second go I looked into how to paint good and got expensive advice. Just sand down the part you wanna paint to break the gloss finish so itll hold better. Different shades thin different. Yellow you barely wanna water down darker colors add more but it varies hard between brands as well. Steal plastic spoons from fast food places and do experimental runs on those. Topcoating is fucking essential to it not looking like amateur work. Topcoating is also kind of a save state where you cant erase underneath it so you can work more freely on tje next layer. Its like photos hop.layer except you gotta go bottom to top and save in between each.
Model kits have been the best thing ive discovered in decades. Making real life stuff that you can nod approvingly at when you walk by it on your house is the ultimate reason we pursue art. Digital stuff doesnt hit the same as real paint and plastic.
Wow that rocks actually

Thanks! It took lots of work
looks sick
Thanks!

Ass shots, mostly cause I wanna brag that I used real fucking ashes for these burn marks. Take from a combination of the ouzza oven at work for darker stuff and my own ashes at home for to even the tone with greyer cigarette and weed ash. No effect like the real.deal
mmmm. jim
That’s dope as hell! I don’t think the before pic loaded. I’d love to see that.
The weathering on the plate with the 07 looks really well done. I like how some of the antiquing almost looks like it’s filled in scoring lines on the left shin. Did you scruff the surface or is that painted on? Either way it implies the mech has a different pose as it battles through space (I’m assuming that’s what it does, I’ve never watched Gundam), which I think is neat.
Could you possibly photograph this in front of a darker cool colored backdrop? Possibly with a softer key light or some cross lighting?
Again, looks great!
