If you think someone is in your home? It’s too late to call the cops, and it’s an especially bad idea if you’re not white and at least middle class.
Outside the home? Absolutely call the cops, but be prepared if the situation escalates.
Hopefully not so you can kill a family member! (Was that a myth?)

Awesome, now the cops have grounds.
This woman was in no condition to use a gun. I don’t know if she had a health/mental issue, or if she was high as hell, but she was nowhere around coherent. That ex cop deserves everything he’s about to get. They should have requested EMS 60 seconds in to speaking with her.
She was paranoid schizophrenic.
