The “hetero” in heterosexual actually refers to Heteromeles Arbitifolia, the Toyon. It’s a large shrub native to the west coast of North America with clusters of small red berries that are a food source for wildlife. The plant has multiple culinary and medicinal purposes as well and even had a lot of popularity with residents of LA in the 1920’s as a Christmas decoration (until they had to ban harvesting wild branches because people would just take them off of public land and kill the bush). Its deep rooting habit makes it hardy in warm, dry areas making it a nice low-maintanence pick for landscaping.
