As an American it was always somewhat puzzling to understand the deeper drivers of cultural differences between the Canadian provinces having never been anywhere but BC and briefly, but the book “On Oil” is a great recent history of the spread of oil culture and money in Alberta, the Texas influences and ties there and helps frame why so much money and media influence is being welded against Canadian values and democracy right now.

It’s short and incredibly informative. https://www.biblioasis.com/shop/new-releases/on-oil/

Used to work with an Irishman in Vancouver. We were drinking in a bar by site after work on a Friday and I had to stop him from starting a fight with a group of 6 Newfs because he thought they were making fun of him.
We ended up having a good laugh with them about it after he’d chilled out, but it was touch and go for a minute there…

Fun fact, the root word of “Viking” in old norse is “vík” which means a bay or inlet. The literal translation of the word Viking then is “Bayman”, which if you know Newfies well, is a term they are very familiar with. A thousand years and the meaning of the term hasn’t really changed that much.

      Ill paint a picture:

Lots of cattle farming in Alberta too, so there isn’t a lot of new age thinkers there who care about factory farming pollution of water systems, and that all that farm land could feed more people, and the terrible conditions animals live in.

So when I’ve gone on work trips all the food places at hotels and events are all beef/rib products and fries. Finding a salad or some vegetarian protien is difficult.

I went on a two-three day work trip and lost 5lbs from lack of food choices.

Talking to them is like being in Hicksville, with lifted smokey diesel trucks, etc.

That’s been my experience at Calgary hotels and trade shows…as well as interacting with people. One food court had Burger place, rib place, kabob place, some other meat place. My option was fries. The hotel option was fries except those were beef fat cooked.

If that doesn’t represent Calgary, then the business and hospitality industry has to step up, because hotels and business events are where outsiders meet your ciry

It’s thirty percent favoring secession in the last poll I saw, and Canada has terrible voter turnout. It could easily pass.

I’m not sure what percentage favor annexation by the US, I know Smith or Poilievre would jump at the chance to be Governor of Canada, but the conservative parties seem to split pretty hard on that.

There could plausibly be a majority of voters to start trying to secede, but not to go for annexation by the US. But if they do secede, they’ll just get annexed, it’s not up to the voters at that point.

Mhm. Right. A paper contract that’s only valid with Canada. The reason FN are not in favour of secession/US control, is because they’d almost definitely lose any treaty-like claims and privileges. Those treaties are only good so long as Canada maintains control over the area. If Alberta, with the backing of the USA, declares that land not part of Canada, what do you imagine is going to happen – outside of a strongly worded letter of protest and some thoughts and prayers on facebook? Canada can’t realistically retain that region by force, especially if the people of Alberta are against it. FN would not be able to stand up to, nor ‘negotiate’ with the USA’s more authoritarian / fascist regime.

At best, you’ll get something like what happened to the Mohawks after the various wars for independence were settled, and the states basically kicked em out for having sided with the brits. FN might be given an opportunity to resettle into other parts of Canada as essentially refugees.

Self governing doesn’t mean they’re independent / sovereign. I don’t see how your comment changes anything about what I’d noted, honestly.

Its like saying “The Palestinians have voted, and Israel will now stop bombing them”. Or claiming that the Palestinians are sovereign/independent just because they voted and declared themselves a nation / tried to get into the UN. The cold reality is that if they lack the power to enforce that vote / declaration, it’s fairly meaningless.

Another example would be things like the Trump administration’s war crimes. The world voted / generally agreed that certain actions were war crimes, and that there should be repercussions should anyone commit them. The US commits them daily, and is not accountable for their actions, because no one has the power to enforce those declarations against the US. But you think a FN vote will beat them. “OK, sure, whatever”.

Do you mean the PNW and BC? THEN YES.

I have more in common with BC than anywhere else in America. I’m tired of having my lot thrown in with red state shitholes.

Secession is the democratic human right of self determination.

About bureaucracy vs culture, this is a good example for the Donbass and Crimea. Crimea had been Russia for centuries, and was only associated with the Ukraine as a bureaucratic move by Khrushchev under the Soviet Union. The people are overwhelmingly ethnic Russian, and overwhelmingly support Russian annexation after the coup. They have very little in common with ethnic Ukrainian nationalists in Lviv.

People have a right to exist, not nations. When they have no other choice then this makes them nothing more than serfs within neofeudal bondage.

Hate to burst your bubble… but BC’s currently looking likely to elect a conservative party later this month. A conservative party that had staffed up with Alberta separatist staffers, prior to its leader stepping down, and then the subsequent election call.

A 75% chance of a conservative majority, when the conservatives don’t even have a fixed leader at present – which also makes it really hard to attack them on policies, as it’s not clear if they’re “totally separatist traitor cucks” or just “regular conservative sorts” (ours hadn’t been quite so crazy as the states, until recently, what with all the US influence campaigns and money).

The interior and northern areas of the province have almost always been conservative areas. Only Vancouver, and parts of the Island, are likely to be ‘sympatico’ with your perspective.

Even “red” states tend to be a dichotomy of urban liberals and rural conservatives, or college educated liberals and service sector conservatives, or minority liberals and white conservatives. Some of the reddest counties in America are in New York and California. Some of the bluest are in Florida and Texas.

Secession is the democratic human right of self determination.

Secession from whom, by whom, through what political mechanism?

I get what you’re saying, and it only brings up more reasons that our system is as outmoded as it is undemocratic. States are an archaic and arbitrary construct. Even though anyone would agree that one-person-one-vote is a fundamental democratic principle, we don’t have that. A Wyoming voter has SEVENTY TIMES more voting power in the Senate than a Californian. States vote on the national issues there, not people. States are no more people than corporations are.

I don’t think there’d be much of a problem if we voted across the board, but we don’t, so state secession is the only option.

All other avenues are closed within a system designed to not allow democracy, nevermind reform.

How do you get states to abolish themselves?

Ah, not to worry. I predict the current referendum vote is to go 40% / 30% / 30% for ‘No further referendum’ / ‘Referendum to go’ / ‘referendum to stay’ respectively, which our premier will say ‘Oh, looks like 60% of folks want some form of further referendum’, so they can drag this out for another few years while we all grow even more furious about it. Then they’ll have another referendum and then finally find out that the majority of people would actually rather stay in Canada, or, more likely, further manoeuvring to keep the whole thing dragging out for all time - more time for the UPC to use our own money to feed us lies and propaganda.

It seems like the perfect issue to keep us all angry and give her leverage to get gifts and hall passes from the feds. I think the main threats to her are the separatists inside her party ousting her, or another provincial conservative party popping up to split the vote. I don’t think either are putting her at significant risk though.

I will continue to hope otherwise.

Considering the ballot questions are public and binary (yes/no), I’d be pretty fucking shocked to see a result that included the completely fictitious 3-way option you describe.

Yah all polls regarding Alberta separatistm almost alway come out as 75% to outright stay in Canada, whatever tactics they’re using to try and minipulate people aren’t working, especially since America has become such and obvious dumpster fire.

Not sure if you’re joking but Edmonton is a very liberal city. Calgary as well but has more finance/oil bros. The plentiful rural zones are where the cousin fucking dimwits are located

Actually they can. You live in Canada you have to take the good with the bad. It sucks.

Technically, this still keeps Cascadia intact, which is the real long term goal.
