Hereās a bigger bugbear (than the Vulcan question): how does it all work in Ferengi society?
Iāll split order my post by my pre-Rom and post-Rom thoughts.
Pre-Rom:
- Gay (not Lesbian) Ferengi are probably a normal thing.
- Based on DS9 āProfits and Laceā and Nilvaās reaction to the transitioned Quark, it might be possible that male to female transition, while considered very weird, would be considered fine if you make a sufficiently good female by Ferengi standards, if you know what I mean.
- Conversely, female to male transition probably wouldnāt be accepted, based on the reaction to Pel, although Pel didnāt necessarily actually change her gender identity or get her lobes surgically enlarged. It may be possible that some trans Ferengi existed and simply hid that they werenāt cis, although itād be more difficult considering the mobility limitations on females. There were probably surgeons on the planet who were like āIf youāve got the Latinum, Iāll totally do it.ā
- Overall, I think the sentiment would be, āIf youāve got the lobes and youāve got the Latinum, I donāt care what you do.ā
- For instance, if a non-binary Ferengi made lots of profit, they might not be totally respected, but at least not bothered as much.
Post-Rom:
- Lesbian Ferengi are probably legal but still frowned upon.
- Transitioning either way is probably easier, considering the shift in gender roles as seen by 2381 in Lower Decks.
- Generally, with the Federation membership bid, probably a lot more open but still rife with social issues.
Questions:
- Do Ferengi experience dysphoria when their ears are the wrong size? (Very possibly yes, considering the dysphoria humans can experience from other secondary sex characteristics.)
I think youāre probably on the right track here, but I think your takes are on the charitable side. The Ferengi would clearly like to believe their attitude is āIf youāve got the lobes and youāve got the Latinum, I donāt care what you do,ā but in practice they are very committed to some massive societal disparities which are not financially profitable.
In a society so deeply stratified by sex (and far from egalitarian in other regards), MtF trans folks would likely be looked down upon for apparently abandoning a way of life which Ferengi males clearly consider both morally superior and far more pleasant than the lot of a woman. In practice I suspect very few would condemn themselves to the legal status of a Ferengi woman by openly transitioning. Theyād seek out secret treatment, and private expression, but publicly continue to appear as men.
Conversely, FtM trans people would be viewed with intense suspicion: a conniving, cynical Ferengi would likely view such a case as a woman attempting to escape from her rightful lower place in society. Frankly, given the horrific situation Ferengi women are placed in, if FtM trans folks were accepted as men even in the minimal legal sense, Iād expect at least a few cis women to attempt to take that avenue out of the societally mandated hellhole they would otherwise be condemned to. Perhaps the Ferengi have reliable tests for gender dysphoria that would doom these efforts, or perhaps not.
As for non-binary folks, I donāt think theyād get it. Either youāre a normal (male) Ferengi, or youāre an inferior and powerless woman. How could someone possibly fall between those two states?
In short, the incredibly pervasive and legally enforced sexism of Ferengi society creates significant complications for trans folks of any kind. Itās a really horrible and frankly depressing setup, which the Ferengi themselves are willfully oblivious to.
Post Rom, I would expect the womenās liberation movement to be a watershed event for trans folks of all sorts, and lead to a fairly rapid normalization of Ferengi publicly being their true selves. Itās still going to be a rough road socially, but clearing the legal barriers will go a long ways.
