Society always needs some group to bogeyman such that animalistic aggression and hatred can be levied against them without any consequence. We say we’re a civilized society, but I dare you to find someone who would be willing to say “I think people who are sexually attracted to children and haven’t offended are not necessarily evil monsters, and they need support” without a crowd throwing rocks at them.

      Which is absolutely sad.

Prison should be a place for rehabilitation, with the goal of returning them to society better than when they entered. But prison, at least in the US, is more a place to lock away and punish undesirables. I’m 100% against the death penalty and would prefer to spend our tax dollars trying to rehabilitate even those we deem “unredeemable,” they’ll be locked up anyway, we might as well give them a realistic shot of becoming positive members of society.

Yeah, US prisons are particularly horrific for an otherwise well-developed country. Some of the Scandinavian countries (Norway?) do prison way better.
