I always liked One Small Step. I didn’t realize Lt Kelly, or at least the actor, was in other Trek. Seven’s eulogy was excellent.

    “The Yankees… In six games.”

Having recently rewatched that episode is what tipped me off. The discovery (heh) of his influence over the series warranted attention. Seeing Seven’s transition from dismissal to admiration really made it special.

“Did you go into the Badlands? Why did you go into the Badlands? Who told you to go into the Badlands? Did Starfleet tell yo to go into the Badlands? What have I told you about going into the Badlands?!”

What’s more, his uncredited “Boy - Army Helmet” character in the TOS episode “Miri” was his first role.

It’s all manner of confusing, as trekcore lists it as 11, but imdb has it as 8.

edit: memory alpha also lists it as 11, but wiki says 8

I was concerned it’d be something like this.

Title Episode Production number Stardate US release date

              “Balance of Terror” 1x08 6149-09 1709.2–1709.6 1966-12-15

          From Memory Alpha:

Of Remata’Klan’s character, Morris opined, “I likened him to a samurai warrior who is loyal only to his feudal lord and that’s how I played him. The Jem’Hadar are predisposed to have that loyalty; it’s bred into them by the Vorta. His willingness to die despite Sisko’s offer of an alternative is Remata’Klan’s most honorable moment.”

After reading that I’m sad he hasn’t gotten higher-profile roles. He took such care with building that character I’d love to see what he could do.

When I was a kid, I came up with a theory that the hen hadar had no individual names, like the Borg. Everyone in a jem hadar unit was whatever prefix Remata or Omata etc refered to the name of the unit. Clan was added because they were all a cohort of a dozen or so people. And that the only way to distinguish amongst themselves was their rank, solidifying the whole “order brings victory, victory is life” mantra.

I know now that doesn’t really work but hey, I had fun thinking it up.

In a weird way this humanized the Jem Hadar. It gave then a motivation beyond killing or conquering that made them more relatable than, say, the Borg or Species 8517.

Thanks for posting this thread and giving me a whole new appreciate for this actor and his characters. 🖖
