Perth / Western Australia@aussie.zone•City of Vincent Mayor calls on East Perth Power Station to be activated year-round
1·1 day agoSafe pedestrian access across East Parade remains the precinct’s most significant barrier, according to Xamon. Plans for a footbridge connecting East Perth train station to the Power Station site have stalled…
I mean, there is safe pedestrian access with the shared bike/walking path that goes under the road just after the end of the train platforms. Isn’t it overkill to put a pedestrian bridge over the road? I’m guessing it would be built as an extension coming out from the existing platform access footbridge. So it’d make the walk to the power station quicker than going a safe but long way.

Aussie Enviro@aussie.zone•6 things Australia should do to tackle the energy crisis rather than just building bigger fuel reserves
4·1 day agoThey’ve not stopped either, the fossil fuel lobby constantly pillories Chris Bowen as the great enemy now.
But the role out is happening quietly, but quicker than ever. The main impediment was/is the changes to the transmission systems. Its an area I’m so hopeful about for Aus, and I think now justifiably so.

3·1 day agoWhen BP announced they were shutting the Perth refinery, years ago now, I just looked at that and thought has no one at BP or Government/Security services considered the sovereign risk that introduced? Anyway, we’re here now.

Australia@aussie.zone•National Press Club slams critics of Israeli envoy’s addressEnglish
4·3 days ago“The core complaint is that Ambassador Newman should not have been invited because he or his government offends you,” Reilly said.
A bad smell offends me, old mate hurling abuse at the traffic lights offends me. The language used doesn’t reflect the crimes of the State the Ambassador represents pal!
Responding to questions from Deepcut, Reilly claimed the press club withdrew Pavlovsky’s invitation because the Russian embassy “wanted an altered format” for Pavlovsky’s address, and because “the board formed a late view that we would not learn much from this Ambassador that was not already known at the time”.
What new did we learn from the Israeli Ambassador? The fictional narratives and lies he told are all the same as we’ve heard before.
Reilly and his “iNdEpEnDent” Board should have a long hard look in the mirror,
APAN President Nasser Mashni called the press club’s invitation to Newman “disgraceful” last week, saying it “cannot claim to uphold journalistic integrity while platforming oppressors and silencing voices for the oppressed”.

Aussie Enviro@aussie.zone•Australia’s Earth Overshoot Day a stark reminder of the need for change
2·5 days agoOh i get you, yeah that sounds right. Jimmy the Giant just had a show on early 2000’s subcultures where he referred to the diminishing of third places for young people to be meaning they don’t have their own space to develop as an individual group. He gave the examples of skaters, goths, and parkour.

Aussie Enviro@aussie.zone•Australia’s Earth Overshoot Day a stark reminder of the need for change
2·5 days agoMaybe people do use parks more? I’m not sure.
Theres a lot more stuff inside our houses to do now, and I seem to remember reading an article saying we are spending less time outdoors and drawing the connection between that and the increasing demand for larger houses. So maybe thats part of the reason why the outdoor equipment is pushed up against each other, because its all used so rarely anyway.

Perth / Western Australia@aussie.zone•Hospitality operators call for end to Rottnest's staffing advantage
1·5 days agoCultural exchange isn’t the point though. The 88 day extension is because there is a long term decrease in the numbers of people living in country towns or travelling workers in the country to fill these seasonal roles.
This is in part the agricultural industries own fault for allowing increasingly large tracts of land to be bought by less farmers, or farming companies. I would say, its not all their fault because as a society we’ve allowed the ‘business efficiency’ decisions, only chasing lower costs/higher margins = always better, to drive the direction of business in this country.
As an example of how this has affected farming in particular, its meant banks have removed more staff who can assess the viability of an ongoing farm on its merits as an ongoing agricutural venture, and replaced them with more staff who are trained to look at the farm as a basket of assets and the projected revenues rendered from those assets. This model, like in many industries, has made banks far more risk averse to lending to farmers, leading to more farmers selling and moving on, unable to cover cash flow problems. This had the flow on effect of detaching that farmer’s whole family from that land and local area. Those families end up moving their lives to the coasts and the cities away from other farmers in the area who might’ve had the opportunity to employ these family members seasonally on their farms. Now we’ve reached a stage where the commercial farming corporations are seen as the safer option for lending for too many banks, so even fewer farming families are able to carry on, on the land. These corporate farms are less connected with the towns and land again, which will negative effects on the land, as well as increasing pressure on governments to import more labour who are willing to work for less money and no ongoing stake in the businesses. The agcorps have little stake in the land or towns beyond maintaining a decent return, and the towns and new farmers have little ongoing stake in the agcorps so can be less attentive to the longterm needs of the farm.
And this all began because some guy called Milton Friedman couldn’t accept he got a few things wrong in an economics book he could never stop re-editing. The inefficient outcomes of ‘business efficiency’ decision making are being accepted, but the financial system doesn’t accept a different method of assessment yet.
I went off on a fair tangent here, i suppose I ended up only somewhat relating back to your comment.

Aussie Enviro@aussie.zone•Albo’s new funding for transition; electric trucks; electric ferries; Boomerang Labs
4·5 days agoI suppose thats the problem with these kind of current event round-ups, a trade-off of less details for more categories. I see these three quotes that are probably the most relevent parts of the article.
John Grimes chimed in at the celebration, saying China had sold more electric trucks in one year in 2025 compared to Australia’s entire diesel fleet
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is flagging a $25.3 million in funding for electric truck charging provider NewVolt to deliver three open-access, fast-charging hubs. The hubs will be for medium to heavy electric trucks and built along major freight corridors

4·5 days agoThis is true. Its also resulting in negative community and social effects where free and open community spaces are going into disuse or disappearing entirely as those that can afford to purchase more activities forbthwmsleves to do privately.
I thought about this only this morning as I passed a house that had a big trampoline squashed up against a big round tree swing (rendering the tree swing unusable). I’m sure its nice to have both, but was it that necessary?

Aussie Enviro@aussie.zone•Albo’s new funding for transition; electric trucks; electric ferries; Boomerang Labs
5·6 days agoMeanwhile, New Energy Transport, which operates a fleet of fully electric trucks powered by wholesale renewable energy, has progressed further with its trial last year to replace diesel trucks for Who Gives a Crap.
…
The heavy truck maintained high speeds along the entire route, including the steep Skyline and Governess hills near Goulburn, where diesel trucks usually struggle and completed their journey 25 minutes faster. The truck was also 84 per cent lower in energy costs compared to a diesel truck.
And battery technology is in the nascent era of development compared to ICE vehicles. If people want profuctivity gains try doing something that saves the planet. Seems to work out pretty well, when someone actually has a go.

Technology@lemmy.world•Thousands lose their jobs in deep cuts at tech giant OracleEnglish
22·7 days agoI don’t know why software engineers being on lemmy, so are using activitypub, are so down and out about industry job cuts. Don’t get me wrong, change of industry might be on the cards, but that doesn’t mean being a software engineer stops, and these proof of concept sites and networks are a revelation.
There are so many projects for software engineers. For example, Activitypub is the chance to develop a genuinely healthy market of small to medium sized networked social media sites that are far more reactive to users, unique, and experimental than the likes of engagement driven fb could ever be.
I don’t know, the rivers of gold might be over for a portion of ‘big’ tech software engineers, but it seems like a super exciting time to be in small enterprise software engineering, with the plethora amount of projects that could be being explored.
Of course there are heaps of other non-social media software engineering small scale projects, i just focused on activitypub here because it seems so strange and obvious to a rando like me.

Be nice to see something happening with the site, but does anyone really understand what they’re proposing with the hemp aspect?
A hemp ‘innovation hub’ inspired by Middle East tourism businesses and is in communication with the French hemp Society President. Possibly covering hemps use in building materials?
Seems like a woolly brainfart of an idea.
