I started the Ghost Island saga, and seemed interesting and fun but, oh boy, I’m tired of the sexist bullshit against Nami and Robin. Like a ghost basically SAing the both of them?
I don’t know, the story has been great but the sexism and the apparently increasing sexualization of the female characters is getting to me and making me not want to see the series any more.
Does it get any better?
No, not really. The invisible sa machine in that arc is probably the worst it gets but the sexualization of character designs only intensifies. And while there is some good queer/trans representation to come, there’s also some very not good queer/trans representation to come
Reminder that the creator supported the Rurouni Kenshin guy when he was busted with so much CSAM in his apartment, he was thought to be distributing it :yea:
The number of mangakas who lined up to help with the Rurouni Kenshin 30th anniversary is a great reason to drop the entire industry into the sea.

Hajime no Ippo supremacy
Not in the slightest
Then I think I’m done. I don’t think I can continue watching how Nami and Robin are only built up to become porn characters.
The manga is a little better on that front since the anime tend to drag out scenes in general which makes these aspects more egregious.
But even though I’d argue that One Piece is better on that front than most shonen manga, this kind of thing never truly goes away.
I’d say try the manga for like some 50ish chapters after the point you are and see if it is tolerable or not.
It gets worse imo.
The women in the series progressively get bigger breasts, wider hips, smaller waists and less and less plot relevance. The ghost guy is the most overt and worst SA depicted, but the depiction of women only get worse. They all slowly devolve into looking like Nami. Robin loses her skin color and her nose becomes less pronounced.
Later on there’s a child version of Boa Hancock. Boa has the “love-love” fruit, which lets her petrify anyone who is attracted to her. The child version petrifies a bunch of people. There’s also an 8-year old in an adult womans body who gets sexualised just as much as everyone else + Blackbeard tries to force her to marry him. Also almost all women who fight have some weird sexualised fruit. Oda sucks so bad.
I’ve only been reading the manga, and I’m only up to Water Seven right now, but even I’ve been sensing that and it’s making me nervous. In the beginning, he was setting up some interesting stuff with gender dynamics, considering how equal Nami is in the crew, the backstory stuff with Zoro and then Tashigi showing up, and then Viví and Robin as extra female crew members to start to balance things out, but he hasn’t really seemed to return to or develop most of these themes. I heard he instead, gets more sexist as he goes on. I haven’t hit my limit yet, but it’s something I’ll keep in mind as I keep going.
I’m hoping the One Piece Live Action fixes some of these things even if it drops the ball on others. I’m on ep 2 and I love the changes they made with Laboon (fixes him with singing vs punching) and that they’re already doing more with Tashigi than Oda ever did (I haven’t finished the manga, but I have been told she goes basically unused and then power scaled out of existence for the rest of it). I just doubt they’ll be able to go that long because it’s on Netflix and people age.
Also, anyone have a suggestion for a manga similar to One Piece, but less sexism? Or maybe almost as good? I heard it’s in a class of its own so maybe there’s not. I’m sure part of that is the length of the series lets it pull off story arcs and call backs that can’t really be equaled by other manga.
