Banning tips is shit anti worker bullshit that nobody here should support

Everyone should have a living wage where tips aren’t necessary but if someone WANTS TO GIVE YOU A TIP and your EMPLOYER SAYS NO they should be fucking killed lol

Remembering all the times i had to sneak around like Im palming a drug drop because a customer at the retail store i worked at wanted to give me $5 or $20 but I’d have been FIRED FOR ACCEPTING

Actually, everyone should receive equal pay for equal work. Tips create disparities between workers for basically no reason.

Okay, but if we’re working together and you get paid more than me because you lucked out on a good table, or because you’re prettier or smile bigger or whatever, I’m going to resent it. Do you not see how this destroys solidarity and creates competition?

This is why workers pool tips, and why bosses hate it when workers pool tips. Equal pay for equal work.

Like I had a co-worker who was a conventionally attractive young woman and even she didn’t like getting tipped more because it weirded her out from creeps and she felt bad getting paid more when we all worked just as hard. Sure she probably liked having more money than less money but it doesn’t really help anyone imo.

Maybe you getting a better table than me, or being the first one to pick up that $20, is the difference between me having a big plate of hunger for dinner tonight or not. Maybe I will cry about it, because I just got to watch my meal get taken by someone else.

All this does is create competition and resentment between servers, which is exactly how the boss likes it. That’s why bosses often ban pooling tips, they want you to rub it in my face that you got more money than me and ask me if I’m jealous, so that I think about that instead of thinking about how low our wages are. It displaces the blame for low pay from the boss to our coworkers.

Also, the boss can use tips as a way to play favorites! Maybe you’re the boss’s family so you get all the best tables and I get the scraps, because the boss wants you to get more tips than me. Am I supposed to just smile and be happy for you?
