Have a sneer percolating in your system but not enough time/energy to make a whole post about it? Go forth and be mid - welcome to the Stubsack, your first port of call for learning fresh Awful you’ll near-instantly regret.
Any awful.systems sub may be subsneered in this subthread, techtakes or no.
If your sneer seems higher quality than you thought, feel free to cut’n’paste it into its own post — there’s no quota for posting and the bar really isn’t that high.
The post Xitter web has spawned so many “esoteric” right wing freaks, but there’s no appropriate sneer-space for them. I’m talking redscare-ish, reality challenged “culture critics” who write about everything but understand nothing. I’m talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. They’re inescapable at this point, yet I don’t see them mocked (as much as they should be)
Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldn’t be surgeons because they didn’t believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I can’t escape them, I would love to sneer at them.
(Credit and/or blame to David Gerard for starting this. Apologies for not getting the previous one up - my old laptop died)
In his second twitter account, Brangus / Ronny Fernandez talks about using substances including LSD and 5-MeO-DMT which is found in plants and the Colorado River Toad, as well as methamphetamine. He says its really funny to drug women without them knowing to gaslight them, and that he uses substances before committing sexual abuse. I updated the big post on LessWrong and psychedelics.
Tired of people misrepresenting HPMOR as a Harry Potter fanfic where Harry uses science to study magic.
Anyone who has actually read the fic knows it’s a Death Note/Waiting for Godot/Spaceballs crossover fic about aristocrat failchildren bringing glowstick swords into an airsoft match. There are zero superfluous sentences. Every sentence a painting, especially when Glup of the Most Noble and Ancient Judean People’s Front of Shitto casts Compelled Duel on Backgroundella O. C. Technicallynot of the Superlatively Posh and Antiquarian Judean Popular Front of Whatsherface.
In the words of Anton Chekhov: if you establish in the first act that you must never burn anything you have transfigured, you must have a character transform something into a rocket in the third act and then fire that rocket without any harm done. This will prove you’re a better writer than Chekhov.
Final exam question: You are facing the most reddit serial killer of all time and his dumbass henchmen. Armed with only your wits and a spell that can transform anything into anything else, devise an escape. For extra credit, invoke one or more of the following science fiction plot devices: nuclear fusion, carbon nanotubes/fullerenes, wormholes/warp drives, neutronium, wave/particle duality, brown notes, grey goo, the anthropic principle, quantum tunneling, Maxwell’s demon.
HPMOR: the only novel that has been fully read by fewer people than mistakenly believe to have fully read it.
HPMOR does have one great lesson that all the rationalist and even Eliezer himself have failed to internalize: Fascists should be decapitated.
I can’t believe I’m saying this… I am one of those who actually fully read it, because:
Out of sheer morbid anthropological fascination, I infiltrated an in person HPMOR reading group (not in the Bay area) in the latter days of it coming out. I described it to friends as going undercover. It was a trip and a half.
Hot damn, quality sneer
Copied to the general HPMoR sneer thread top post.
spotted on r/betteroffline: Nscale, one of neocloud companies, released S-1. even when they show “adjusted EBITDA” and “adjusted operational loss” where they exclude, among other things, depreciation and stock based compensation, they never break even on that “adjusted operational loss”, net losses are multiple hundred % (ie. they lose 4x-23x as much as they receive in revenue)
but yeah, it’s profitable on inference, it’s the worst it’ll ever be and other marketing lies from twitter’s most concussed boosters
That’s the bunch who signed a billion dollar contract to bullild a datacenter on a British scaffolding-storage lot they didnt own, isn’t it?
there was a pivot about it, so, so it seems
AI ‘actress’ Tilly Norwood melts down and starts talking in CANTONESE as she is interviewed by Piers Morgan h/t Naked Capitalism
Long-in-the-tooth Mr Morgan remained remarkably calm as the AI bot unleashed a monologue in Cantonese, staring down the lens and allowing her to finish her point.
But Mr Conti was stunned, shaking his head incredulously at the unexpected answer to his question before turning his head to smile, presumably at someone else sitting in the room with him.
He soon managed to compose himself, offering the simple rebuttal, ‘I didn’t quite get that,’ which proved sufficient to cut Tilly off and fix the glitch.
At this point, even Mr Morgan had to laugh, chuckling for a few seconds before addressing the AI bot, who sat in her seat expectantly as if rolling out a Cantonese soliloquy on an English-language YouTube show was the most normal thing in the world.
Delivering the bad news, he said: ‘You suddenly seemed to be speaking Chinese, completely randomly for no reason.’
Mr Conti by now had completely lost control, giggling hysterically - either in amusement at Tilly’s off-script answer, or in unbridled relief that his job might be safe for the time being.
Why the hell is it so hard to find a translation of what it ‘said’? Not a single news outlet could ask a native speaker, can’t even be bothered to dump it through whisper? This, how many years after YouTube force pushed autodubbing? The lack of effort is telling.
r/Cantonese not impressed either.
Anyway once we replace long in tooth piers with PiersBot 9000, itll just know Cantonese and this won’t even make the paper

“YOU MUST TRY THE HOSTAGE SPECIAL!”
God those grifters are still trying to make that collection of two year old product demos A Thing? And entertainment industry boomers are still falling for it?
“r/Cantonese not impressed either.”
Theyre arguing about if it was actually any form of legible chinese at all, rather than translating it
Scott The Greater appears to be crashing out a bit, for once not over personal issues:
https://scottaaronson.blog/?p=10062
If you want to know my current take, you simply start with the one above, then update on the fact that the wild prophecies have come true. The first rumblings, I’d say, came a decade ago with AlphaGo, they got noticeably louder with LLMs and coding and reasoning agents, and they’ve accelerated this summer and fall into a crescendo of wonders and terrors that one needs to be a particular kind of idiot to deny.
My position on AI is merely the conservative, skeptical position of 2006, updated with intellectual honesty for the reality of late 2026. And that position, if you need me to spell it out, is as follows: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
And most fun:
For anyone who says AI doom sounds like an apocalyptic religion, that the rationalists/Singulatarians seem like a Bay Area cult, that Eliezer Yudkowsky gives off the vibes of a messianic prophet: yes, yes, and yes. But crucially, today you’re no longer being asked to believe in arguments and extrapolations, but only in the front-page news. Accepting the reality of the coming machine god after it’s solved Navier-Stokes and dozens of other longstanding open math problems (while dramatically ramping up in capability every month), is sort of like accepting Jesus after he’s returned to earth on the gleaming cloud. It’s the epistemic bare minimum.
EDIT: Unfortunately (and I suppose inevitably) this shows up a few posts back
I’ve been unloading every day to—who else?—GPT 5.6 Pro about all the pain and trauma and embarrassments of my past. It turns out that, where two years ago GPT was a passable therapist, now it’s the greatest therapist in history, at least for what I need.
Imagine the horror that ascended my spine when, to fulfill my moderator responsibilities, I read the reverse-chronological feed of new comments and saw that “greatest therapist in history” declaration, and then discovered who wrote it.
Well, I suppose I should thank Mr. Aaronson for conveying to us what it feels like to be a precisely targeted demographic
it’s solved Navier-Stokes
This phrasing is obvious nonsense, but surely Scott should know better??
Oh yeah, I solved the Navier-Stokes equations. Check it out: u = 0.
“after it’s solved* Navier–Stokes”
To be fair, counterexamples are important types of proofs for particular kinds of problems, and a type of proof that computers are suited for since they can create a huge number of halfbaked things then deterministically check them

So we’re going full mask off now. Awesome
On top of that, why the hell are you using ChatGPT as a therapist when you say that it’ll end the world???
Personally I would be more concerned about using ChatGPT as a therapist when a company run by desperate psychopaths has everything you ever type into it in plaintext in a vibecoded data bucket
The next few years are going to be so incredibly stupid
I’ve been unloading every day to—who else?—GPT 5.6 Pro about all the pain and trauma and embarrassments of my past. It turns out that, where two years ago GPT was a passable therapist, now it’s the greatest therapist in history, at least for what I need.
Has he not heard about all the cases where LLMs have led people to delusion and sometimes severe self harm or suicide? And yes, each of them thought that ChatGPT really understood them. That’s what delusion is.
The strange thing here that I did not expect is that somehow, all of these major achievements are only in proving mathematical theorems (and
committing felonieshacking computer systems). The massive improvements are in such restricted domains that the AI labs haven’t even solved the mundane problem of making a profit. And no, any rumors of more mathematical theorems being solved doesn’t change that. (It’s almost like the progress is in areas where hallucinations aren’t a problem. Nobody cares about your failed attempts at felony hacking, and math is formally verifiable.)My colleagues always point to coding when asked to name any other domain where AI has seen major success. But one of my friends works in software for a company far away from SF with no mandatory AI policy. The apocalypse has become so clear that when I asked him about all the doomsday talk about software engineering, he seemed a bit confused. After I asked him if AI has made software engineering obsolete, he said that this week he had an intern try to use AI to fix some code that wasn’t compiling and ended up with a giant mess with tons of files that appeared to compile but didn’t run (with errors filling several screens). Then I asked him, what about AI being indispensable in coding now? “Yeah, if you never learned coding because you’ve only ever used AI, then of course you need AI to code.” Some of his coworkers use it as a tool, others don’t, life has just kept on going for him.
Maybe my friend just doesn’t know all the right skills needed to use AI properly, even though the entire point of AI is that you can take skill out of the equation. Maybe he doesn’t know about all the CLAUDE md skill files and agentic looping and whatever nonsense that definitely fixes everything. Maybe he is just six months out of date, because that’s when all of the real progress happened.
Maybe he is just “a particular kind of idiot”.
(If you hate anecdotes, I made an actual argument here.)
I was just about to follow up my own comment with “also just because AI is good at maths doesn’t mean it’s good at everything” but beat me to it
Scott also makes the assumption that AI won’t run into any financing issues that could stop progress flat, the growing number of people in power striving to regulate it and all that jazz
A bone-deep belief in “general intelligence” is vulnerable to exploitation.
our friends are taking Donald Trump seriously
What, no American Intelligence?

The EAs and Trump really deserve each other.
The EA/lesswronger attitude of “assuming good faith” (to the right people) and taking shit too seriously does play perfectly off of Trump’s blatantly hollow and shallow rhetorical shenanigans.
That’s precisely the reason they were ripe for infiltration by and platforming authoritarian whackdoodles to young tech types
True… except for the fact that some of them were there at the start. Like, for example, Nick Bostrom had some pretty racist/eugenicist stuff come out from the 90s when he was on some mailing lists and 90s nets. Nick Bostrom was a founding member of the Future of Humanity Institute, along with Toby Ord (another EA founding member) and they got money from Elon Musk.
I feel like the problem is less one of infiltration and more one of context drift. The racism and eugenics were in there, but it wasn’t as central to the group as the fun sci-fi stuff so people could pretend it wasn’t there, the same way that people pretend not to know that their coworker heretically believes in the wrong pizza toppings or whatever. Effectively they’re saying “Sure, they may have some bad takes on race or gender or economics but they’re the only ones who will talk about the second coming of Robot Jesus with me.” This dynamic also largely explains why these groups (and arguably sci-fi in general?) are so goddamn white and male.
Of course, as the tech industry took off and these people sought and acquired actual wealth and influence, the dynamic started to reverse. The fascists may not be appropriately invested in the second coming of Robot Jesus, but they are in agreement about eugenics and deregulation, and that’s enough for the tech oligarchs to throw their now-considerable resources behind them.
A comparative demands a comparison class, and the natural completion is “superior to us.” The President is supplying a foundation premise of many superintelligence arguments: how does the less intelligent party remain durably in charge of the superior one?
A strange question to ask given the existence of Donald Trump in the first place.
As of the time of posting, “Superior” has a narrow lead. I’ll be hoping it remains so, as it seems like the most positive-world-leaning outcome to me.
Is this some kind of strange 5D chess gambit that if Trump picks the name that pisses people off the most, then people will try the hardest to regulate it or something? Somehow assuming that people will take this Trump renaming stunt seriously after all the other Trump renaming stunts? Why do I even bother? Fuck. This is so stupid.
When you think you are at the Hinge of Ages that decides the Fate of the Very Universe Forever And Ever Amen, how many waffles you eat this morning has cosmic significance. This is part of what drove the Zizians insane.
you have to be fucking kidding me
grammarly, previously featured as a top class act as well known for, uhhhh checks notes, deeply for guzzling the slop juice, has once again decided to feature for attention
the sheer arrogance of it is pretty out there. I sure hope it doesn’t go well for them, otherwise we’ll probably see this shit be added to the slimester playbook more frequently
I have tried and failed stopping the ensloppification of my company, and I have failed greatly. We now have a new policy that you have to write a justification for making a PR yourself instead of using the chatbot. All the strict checks that were implemented over the years (clear documentation, no more than x files per commit/PR, etc.) are out of the window.
This comes after the push for a fucking AI audit where every employee is supposed to justify why they are not using LLMs for certain tasks. Also some person blew the token limit with some web scraping bullshit last cycle and was lauded for embracing the technology.
Also our CEO has recently begun subtly insinuating he’s now heard of fucking AI doom cultists.
I hate everything.
@mii @cstross I spent decades of my career haranguing management to spend an extra $500 on better computing gear to make their almost six-figure programmers more efficient. But now we’ve got management haranguing employees to use this ephemeral technology. I don’t get it.
“Hey we got you this thing to make you more productive and we’re gonna watch comparative performance and if you’re falling behind we’re gonna have words” would at least make business sense. This is mirror universe shit.
i’m so sorry.
@mii @BlueMonday1984 Can you use a LLM to write these justifications? I mean, they don’t have to be good, no one is reading them after all …
(No, I’m not suggesting to violate any principles of yours, of course)
I’m so sorry, Mii. I can only hope you find a job that actually respects you after this one, because I cannot see your current company recovering from this shit.
…I’m so sorry, and it’s good (???) to know my company still has a few steps on the AI delusion ladder to climb. I guess with the way it’s been going I need to mentally prepare for the same thing you’re going through to come in a few months.
That’s some bullshit. Much respect for pushing back!
I hope that we’re through the worst of it.
I’ve been associating with rationalists for almost a decade. Their ideas were compelling and you can’t deny their foresight. The founders of every superintelligence effort are all bound up in the rationality sphere. Sam Altman and Greg Brockman used to frequent the MIRI offices.
If MIRI was Sam Altman’s old stomping ground, and the AI industry is so evil he can’t work in it, isn’t this an argument that MIRI was either a failure or bad all along?
The way I relate to rationalists is it’s like the bizarre hypertrophied physiques on specialized athletes. In my opinion they have weirdly specialized minds that make them uniquely correct about topics removed from daily experience. These “specialized minds” can also make them off-putting to many people.
I don’t know if I’d consider myself a rationalist. I am intuitively opposed to polyamory, veganism, and consequentialist intuitions. But I certainly trust them to be correct about factual questions.
“I’m intuitively opposed to culinary traditions that people have been developing for hundreds of years, but gosh dang it, when they talk about the Machine God torturing a billion simulated copies of me unless I tithe my income to a Harry Potter fanfiction writer, I’m sold!”
Every time this dorkus is in the news, remember, he’s an absolute wanker.
you can’t deny their foresight.
skill issue
Their ideas were compelling and you can’t deny their foresight
Ah yes, the AI did almost kill everyone with custom bacteria.
And was a Bayesian calculating agent that enumerates every possible explanation for the information it takes in and ranks them according to evidence, along with every trajectory through the world that could fulfill its utility function, rather than approximating the high dimensional shape of text
It annoys me how much credit for predicting AI Eliezer gets away with claiming among his cult (and even outside his cult, like in interviews with reporters that could know better if they bothered to do their job) when all the actual details he predicted are nothing like LLM-based agents.
Likewise for claiming success on predicting instrumental convergence. LLM agents often can’t stay focused on the goal they are post trained and directly prompted to pursue, they are the furthest thing from trying to optimally maximize a bunch of secondary values in pursuit of master goal.
It is actually kind of amazing how diametrically opposed his ideas for a long time were to what actually led to new advances in the field
I’ve previously made an effort post summarizing this! https://awful.systems/post/4172436
tldr; Eliezer has criticized (more like mocked, or dare I say it, sneered at) expert systems, GOFAI, and neural networks, and he never really admitted he was wrong when it became apparent in the 2010s that neural networks really were a viable approach.
and if that didn’t get everyone, the food-safety AI plus MAHA will pick up the stragglers with natural bacteria cultivated in abundance
I recall a long time ago when the first ‘we are going to hack virusses and the terrorists will kill everybody’ stories came up that actual viroligists already explained that this is not how it works, and this isn’t a risk people should really fear. But science fiction > experts.
E: also terrorists don’t just want to kill everybody, and guns and fertilizer are cheap and easy to use.
10 seconds in and I’m already thinking about how many ideas for new chemical weapons I could come up with, and I haven’t studied chemistry since high school.
Least surprising news of the week
If MIRI was Sam Altman’s old stomping ground, and the AI industry is so evil he can’t work in it, isn’t this an argument that MIRI was either a failure or bad all along?
Plus Anthropic-the company he quit for being irresponsible-being heavily tied to EA/rationalism. Not exactly the best endorsement
These “specialized minds” can also make them off-putting to many people.
The eugenics endorsing also does a pretty good job with that
If MIRI was Sam Altman’s old stomping ground, and the AI industry is so evil he can’t work in it, isn’t this an argument that MIRI was either a failure or bad all along?
It is very funny how the rhetoric from the rationalist doomers has been one of the main forces propping up the AI industry. If they’re saying AI will be powerful enough to kill us all, they’re still saying that AI is powerful! They are so high on their own supply (and the fame and wealth from finally being in the spotlight) that they have not realized just how much they have undermined their own cause.
Then again, perhaps one could say that a doomsday prophet, deep down, actually wants doom to happen.
(Also, the paltry amount of technical work done by MIRI has zero relevance whatsoever to modern day AI.)
Is there a place to see this other than getting an account on that site?
There might be some way of bypassing the ATproto sign-in wall, but I don’t know and don’t care enough to figure it out. The content of the locked post is only this screenshot. Ed Zitron asks, “What is your relationship to the rationalists and effective altruists?” and Coxon replies as quoted above.

I’m not a scientologist but LRH had some great ideas
Oh, Zitrons bluesky, cool
that’s his twitter, but he’s also on bsky. coxon might not be
No direct links but various people on bsky have discovered LW and EA and are having a collective ‘wtf is wrong with these people’ and ‘wait all the top AI guys are like this?’ moments. And it is funny to see.
Sadly the 'you can’t explain this stuff without either looking like an insane conspiracy theorist, or you need to write an actual book because people don’t believe you remains a bit true.
E: ok one link: https://bsky.app/profile/niedermeyer.online/post/3mvpuq2deo22u (Guess this is a reference to the SE Gyges thread).
I would kill every cat and dog in the world to make sure Tamagotchi isn’t discontinued
That would be like if Pyrrhus of Epirus cut off Peter’s nose to spite Paul
Not concerning at all.
The ‘sex cult’ framing really seems to be catching on. Of course, none of the eugenics comes up.
Keep spreading the good sneer, everyone! There are still horrors to detail!
Wish how the american AI industry is thoroughly permeated by Yud’s views on AI, and how Yud knows fuck all about how AI or computers work beyond as a sci-fi plot device, would also catch on.
Fyi, I blocked him a while back. Didnt like his whole ‘im the reasonable centrist’ bit while making blocklists of anti ai people.
Turns out the centrist subscribes to transhumanism (hipster edition)

the overtone window can’t be that fucked, can it?
“the overtone window” would be a good name for the amount of racist dogwhistling that’s acceptable in the mainstream media
“e/acc is a troll ideology for upsetting EA people and scamming pmarca”
and “Kurzweilian h+” is just '90s nostalgia for people too proud to shop at Hot Topic
Ah, “Kurzweilian h+,” there’s his marketing tagline. Too bad importing Kurzweil also brings in all his bullshit extrapolation about exponential curves that all the other weird shit is based on. You’re never going to shout down the hyperbolic lunatics by adopting the core thesis of their hyperbole.
Yeah, at best, “Kurzweilian h+” will be pseudoscientific guff. I suppose that keeping the lower strata of intellectually bad elements while discarding the worst of the social ones is progress, but, I mean, it’s kind of like saying you’re into your fad diet and LLM-generated supplement regimen and then looking over at RFK and saying “but that’s totally different!”.
I’ve lost it now, but somewhere in the replies to one of those threads was a person complaining that SneerClub was too much like beating up on nerds in high school. To which I say, first, here’s my blueberry bread recipe, and a nice photo of a winter sunrise, and my Star Trek fanfiction. We all friendly now? Good. Then let me suggest, cordially, that if you are continuing to think of social dynamics in terms of high-school hierarchies and shitty '80s movies well into adulthood, that is a you problem. If I can stop living as the gender I had in high school, you can stop letting your membership in a granfalloon lead you by the nose.
in the same vein as jorjor wel, rakers wile
H+ also brings in the Mores, who are behind humanity+.
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natasha_Vita-More and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_More
Ooh cryonics, classy.
Yeah, as I have mentioned a few times before here I used to read their online H+ magazine a bit, and it was odd, a mix of science and woo, and they published a lot of articles. Until the moment there was one article about how transhumanism must make sure that it also helps the poor, that article was quickly removed (so quickly it wasn’t archived, it was however still in my rss feed which is how I read it). After that article the amount of articles published dropped to nothing. (I always assumed the editor was fired over that or something, I think he himself also added to that article).
Ben Goertzel also regularly wrote for H+ mag. A name that shouldn’t be totally unfamiliar to people who know things about transhumanism, and Ben is into PSI now. (Or considering the tone of some of the articles, he prob always was).
(Yes, I keep writing this same comment here over and over as I seem to be one of the few people who read the magazine at the time who also posts here)
E: looks like H+mag deleted their whole website. (guess being immortal is only for the rich, and not information). But look at this old LW post I found re Goertzel and PSI.
And via the comments: The solution of the whole ‘is PSI real’ problem? Why did you ask (Robin Hanson) it is betting of course.
gyges is a LW regular who believes in the AI doomsday and speaks fluent rationalist but totally is not one, how dare you
Just another centrist taking the long way around to fascism
Ah, so he is part of the broader eugenics community, what a surprise.
the thread has hit the orange site, lots of spluttering indignation

Flock camera is image available on ddossecrets.
https://ddosecrets.org/article/flock-alpr-camera
Very brief observations from micahflee:
https://bsky.app/profile/micahflee.com/post/3mvo2bss3sk2v
This Flock camera is running obsolete, end-of-life software.
- It’s on Android 8.1, released in 2017, support ended in 2021
- It’s on Android patch level 2018-06-5
- It’s running Linux 3.18, released in 2017
This shit is like 8 or 9 years old, and full of vulnerabilities.
Flock was founded in 2017, apparently made their golden camera image within 12-18 months or so and never updated it since. They might not even have the ability to fix it in-house anymore, even assuming it wasn’t a one-off contractor job in the first place. I know the embedded development is a shit show, but somehow it never ceases to disappoint me how lazy and incompetent the entire goddamn industry is.
Fucking android?
HaJ3FgupAm8RrDJW3MHgT9X7Ft27eVaD
What is that? That’s a hard-coded API token that Flock cameras use to identify themselves and get OAuth credentials, which can then be used to talk to Flock’s production servers. Like, anyone on the internet can probably do this right now.
Mein Gott.
The most pedantic nerds on Earth (complimentary) have decided that Jacob Coxon does not need an encyclopedia article all about him for now:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Jacob_Coxon
muwahaha
Bethany Brookshire (who’s an old pal of mine from our ScienceOnline days) reports:
People are using AI to impersonate real science journalists.
And one even got PUBLISHED.
In Science.
Caroline Williams writes on LinkedIn:
The person who was impersonating me managed to get an article published in Science, under my by-line. And they got paid for it!
I’ve seen the pitches (bad), and the email chain between editors who weren’t all that impressed, but googled me and decide to take a punt. When the article came in it was dry, clunky and badly written, but after several rounds of editing they managed to get it into a publishable state. It went online in June and was up until yesterday when it became clear they (and I) had been scammed. […] The whole thing makes me feel sick. I know from my work as an editor that the reputational damage is real. Had I pitched a story to them afterwards they would very understandably have said “Hell no!”. Who has the time to do someone else’s job? They tried “me”, “I” didn’t deliver, so no thank you.
I have no idea how many more editors out there have me on their ‘do not commission’ list because of this person’s actions. There may also be several scientists who will not want to talk to me because they’ve had a bad experience with the fake one.
More broadly, if this is a wider scam (and based on what others have told me, I think it is), it is potentially a serious issue for science journalism and journalism in general. And I’m not sure what we can do about that.
Science has retracted the fraudulent story.
Although no specific errors in this story have so far been identified
Well here’s the very start of the retracted article:
On the screen, two side-by-side squares of color flicker rapidly
Except oops it was referring to a study that used groups of moving dots rather than “squares”. This can be seen in that studies first figure. Bam. A specific error in the first sentence…
(Am I being too pedantic?)
I’m curious about this one, legal repercussions against the perpetrator seem pretty clearly viable (it would seem to me that Science has a viable fraud case, and Williams for probably a few too). why wouldn’t anyone do that? is that not the done thing in academia?
the network effects of reputational damage are pretty oof though :|
this shit should be regulated into the dustbin of history. relatedly, the recent release of unredacted docs from the NYT vs OpenAI case showing the clear knowledge of theft and substitution… it’s all willingly done
So there are 2 explanations to why mssrs Altman and Amodei have decided to ‘slow down’ “AI” development:
- it’s too dangerous, any misstep could awaken the evil Robot Satan and kill us all
- the rate of progress in new GenAI models has slowed down dramatically, and there’s no obvious way to fix that
I’ll let you guess which explanation I find most likely.
edit I missed “blatant regulatory capture”
@gerikson My assumption is that they want a regulatory moat to protect “frontier” models from “open weight” / AKA cheap models.
It’s just margin protection.
@gerikson @BlueMonday1984 Yeah, the whole idea is to perpetuate the myth that these companies are really close to coming out with a product that people will actually pay to use. A product that people will pay enough to cover its cost. They want to simultaneously make an excuse for why it is taking so long while making gormless investors think it is just around the corner.
The symbiosis between the rabid cultists, the technofedual wannabe-lords, and the get rich quick grifters is so weird to watch.
@gerikson @BlueMonday1984
Also they dare not actually let the market price their shares. Also the frontier “labs” are rapidly running out of money and having to raise more and more insane investment rounds. This is a great way to save face and back away from burning $$$$ on training runs that push the frontier of can a model rearrange some arbitrary coloured squares by 10% next they just need to solve the problem of how to make their customers pay cost+ on inference when they’ve been giving it away at steep discounts for nearly 4 years… Easy!

Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.
Quote tweet by Jasmine Sun on Sep 9:
I hear roughly 3 reasons people keep working at AI labs despite believing in ~10% extinction risk:
-
Techno-determinism: Someone will build ASI no matter what, and I can do it better & more safely than China/OpenAI/etc
-
Consequentialism: ASI might kill us, but it also might produce utopia/immortality/superabundance, so it’s a +EV bet
-
Self-interest: I am personally having fun & getting rich working on cool tech with friends. I don’t think about the macro stuff.
Notably, none of this is “I’m hyping up the risk for marketing reasons.” People believe what they say, while being capable of a lot of internal dissonance / compartmentalization / self-justification.
(Personally, I think the public is better served by AI researchers talking about & creating consensus for the specific safety solutions — regulatory or otherwise — they want vs. vagueposting about extinction.)
Normally I’d sneer at their 10% chance of extinction claims, but now that I think about it, if you take their claims seriously at face value, you realize just how these people are monsters. We rightly condemn brutal dictators who commit genocide, but even their crimes would pale in comparison to anything with a 10% chance of exterminating all of humanity.
These “reasons” are laughably indefensible given the supposed stakes here. The first is already terrible, and they just get worse.
- The only moral thing to do here is to immediately stop working for the AI companies, and do whatever you can to stop anyone else. It’s not okay to piss in a pool just because you suspect other people are also doing it. And what makes you think that somehow you are uniquely positioned to succeed in making it safe?
- This is the Sam-Bankman Fried defense (complete with a reference to “EV” (expected value)). When you decide to gamble with the lives of everyone in the entire world, did you first ask them if they are okay with you gambling with their lives? Sure, I might die, but if the ball lands on red, things will be great! How moral does this sound?
- What the actual fuck? Imagine if Hermann Göring defended himself at Nuremberg by saying, “At least I had fun and got rich and worked on ‘cool tech’ with friends.”
Now, I think that these people sincerely believe that AI has a 10% chance of wiping out humanity, because their minds have been poisoned by Rationalist ideology. Their Rationality is so effective that after Bernie Sanders took their premises at face value, they were shocked when Bernie immediately came to the conclusion of locking these people up for 20 years.
There are two specific aspects of Rationalism that cause this mysterious blind spot. First, they believe that superintelligence is inevitable, which conveniently removes responsibility from the people actively trying to bring it about. Second, they treat everyone outside the Rationalist sphere as NPCs who dutifully follow the directions on their script. The rule of law does not even occur to them as they treat the extinction of humanity as just another dinner table conversation starter.
I find the techno-determinism specifically fascinating because it’s so self-perpetuating. Like, everyone believes they can do a better job than everyone else at building the right robot God, and every person working on it is, according to their own beliefs, accelerating the problem they’re worrying about. It speaks to how aggressively they see themselves as special, like they’re protagonists and everyone else is NPCs. I can’t think of any other way to justify the pattern of “this is a terrible idea that will kill us all except when I personally do it.”
Which XKCD comic is it that has the subway full of people pitying everyone else for being mindless sheep? Mix that with the Arrested Development gif of Tobias contemplating an open marriage.
#3 suggests that people in tech have gotten way wayyy too comfortable with saying “hey, I know that company’s evil, but it’s a really good job” about companies that make software for arms manufacturers or ICE or surveillance, so of course people who think AI might kill us all think it’s ok to work for AI companies even if it might cause an extermination.
All 3 of these reasons make them monsters. 1 and 2 are saviour complex bullshit and 3 is just pure greed and selfishness
Ya see, we’re being charitable when we call them grifters instead of genocidaires.
What the actual fuck? Imagine if Hermann Göring defended himself at Nuremberg by saying, “At least I had fun and got rich and worked on ‘cool tech’ with friends.”
Wernher von Braun is the way better comparison. Just maybe not one we like to make, since he basically got away with it and died an icon of U.S. space exploration.
Goering was pretty unapologetic at Nürnberg afaik, since he knew he was getting the rope.

In this day and age, if I see someone talking about major life decisions in terms of +/-EV, I turn on my heel and walk away rapidly. It was kind of cute when this jargon was entering wide use during the online poker bubble, but that was 20 years ago.
What the actual fuck?
This third category is the Patrick Bateman types who would have mainly been confined to finance at the turn of the century. They probably picked San Francisco over New York in part because they were worried the New Yorkers might make them wear a suit.

I’ve been thinking more about this lately, and my metamodel of the rationalist world model (if I may get away with such a pretense) is that they subtly believe that the future is already something crystallized, even if they don’t consciously realize they hold this belief. It is not really a probabilistic philosophy, no matter how much they assert that. Intelligence, to them, is a function that can more and more precisely apprehend the future as it escalates to greater values along the g-scale, and the singularity will manifest an intelligence that can do so with practically absolute precision (hence its prophesied ability to outcompete and replace humans).
When I’m talking to people who haven’t encountered this stuff as closely, I half-jokingly describe the reflexive assignment of probability estimates as a devotional practice akin to prayer or meditation… but it really is! It’s a subtle invocation of the AGI/ASI god, in that I make this imprecise estimate now, to demonstrate my belief in a precisely quantifiable future; but come the singularity, God will relieve my feeble human brain from having to commit this lamentable imprecision. In that reckoning, those who are not even willing to venture an imprecise esimate must have no intelligence worth noting.

What if someone is taking a photo at a wedding, but the scene metering is a bit off, so they apply a +1 EV bias to bring the shadows into view and wash out the background?
(in photography land, EV is ‘exposure value’)
I guess I don’t hang out with enough photographers :)
Reading this, I get the feeling writers are gonna get a lot of mileage out of the rats and their ideology.
These people have spent years attempting to create something they believe represents an existential threat to humanity (causing untold real-world harm in the process), and they’ve remained fully convinced that they’re the good guys throughout every single step of this.
At what point does doing something you think will result in the end of the world become attempted murder?
