    I’d argue that having a stable and reliable routine for basic activities of life isn’t that bad. Eventually those can be ran on autopilot, it frees up mental capacity for unplanned surprises.
    It allows to observe oneselfs behavioral patterns and slowly implement subtle changes to aquire new and healthier habits. Over the course of years these subtle changes stack up and can benefit the body and the mind.

    I’ll assume that a pattern in this case is a mental illness (they can (just) walk away from)?

      No, if it were mental illness you couldn’t walk away from it. But cyclical patterns of behavior are things otherwise healthy people can fall into
