Nova Robotics builds five high-tech, heavily armed robot prototypes for the U.S. military. The robots are programmed to follow orders without question. During a military demonstration, robot Number 5 is accidentally struck by a bolt of lightning. The power surge fries its circuits and gives it sentience, the ability to feel and think for itself. Number 5 believes he is alive and develops a childlike curiosity about the world. He escapes the military compound to avoid being reprogrammed and wiped clean. He wanders into the town of Astoria, Oregon, and hides inside the home of Stephanie Speck, an animal caregiver who initially mistakes the quirky machine for an alien. Number 5’s creators, Newton Crosby and Ben Jabituya, are desperate to find their missing creation before the military scraps their entire robotics project. Meanwhile, a ruthless military security captain wants to hunt down and destroy the “malfunctioning” robot.
